Veins of Iron, a new Wolfenstein 3D-style first-person shooter being developed for the Super Nintendo (SNES) by homebrew developer Mode VII and lead developer Jan Olausson, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund physical cartridges, boxed editions, and additional content.
The project, first revealed in May 2026, aims to deliver a '90s-inspired horror shooter that runs on real SNES hardware via a custom cartridge co-processor.
Kickstarter launch and funding
An update on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, confirmed the Kickstarter is live.
Mode VII set a funding goal of €9,900 and had raised €7,502 from 60 backers as of that update.
Physical boxed rewards — offered as NTSC and PAL editions — are listed at €99.
The developer says the physical cartridge design uses a modern co-processor; Mode VII specifies a custom cartridge equipped with a Raspberry Pi RP2350B featuring a dual-core ARM Cortex-M33 CPU at 150 MHz, 8 MB flash, and 1 MB SRAM, and designed to work on actual SNES hardware.
Developer statements and artwork clarification
When the project first appeared in May 2026, its Kickstarter preview used AI-generated key art.
Olausson told Time Extension that the current box art is an AI-generated placeholder that will be replaced once funding is secured, and that Kickstarter proceeds will be used to expand art, music, and physical cartridge production.
He also emphasized that the game's in-game pixel art was created by him using Aseprite and that the project's low-level code is written in 65816 assembly.
In response to criticism of the campaign's key art after the Kickstarter went live, Mode VII acknowledged the feedback and stated it is working with an artist to produce new hand-drawn box artwork.
Technical progress and features
Olausson has outlined technical progress made since the initial reveal.
Confirmed engine and gameplay features include textured floors and ceilings, a scripted event system for in-game interactions, lighting effects, screen shake, and other engine improvements.
The developer recorded earlier footage using a custom emulator and says an assembled prototype cartridge will be available soon to demonstrate the game running on actual SNES hardware.
Story and tone
Veins of Iron positions itself as a horror-driven experience set in an industrial, plague-ridden Europe where the player pursues ritual killings and an occult threat.
Mode VII describes the protagonist, Viktor Eisenhart, as a World War I survivor drawn into a city of apostate monks, forbidden machinery, and rising dead.
