Varlet High School RPG Unveils Opening Movie, Nintendo Switch Release Set for August 2025

FuRyu Corporation, in collaboration with developer Aquria, has officially released the opening movie for Varlet, their highly anticipated high school RPG set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch.

Varlet is scheduled for both retail and digital release on the Nintendo eShop worldwide on August 28, 2025, marking another milestone for FuRyu, known for its expertise in narrative-driven games. The opening animation for Varlet is crafted by RIRI Yamashita from production iRi, with additional contributions from tori.

The cinematic is underscored by the evocative song "Shiori," performed by Aruka Arisaka (voiced by Minori Suzuki) and composed by wotaku.

This introduction sets the stage for the game's blend of compelling storytelling and psychological themes, offering fans an early glimpse into the atmospheric world FuRyu has designed for Nintendo Switch. Building on FuRyu's legacy of immersive RPGs, Varlet partners with Aquria to deliver a game experience centered on the complexities of adolescence and identity.

At the core of Varlet is Kousei Academy, the first institution to implement the innovative Johari network—a cross-reality, virtual reality platform integrated into daily student life.

Johari facilitates everything from information access and commerce to social communication, quickly becoming essential to the academy’s students. However, the network has inadvertently fostered a culture obsessed with social approval.

An urban legend takes root within Kousei Academy’s walls, suggesting that students whose desires for acknowledgment grow too strong are drawn into otherworldly dimensions known as "Glitches." It is rumored that monsters inhabit these Glitches, replacing students in the real world.

The protagonist soon uncovers the truth behind these tales, discovering that many classmates have indeed disappeared or been replaced by mysterious entities. Players step into the role of a member of the Student Support Services (SSS), an in-game guild committed to resolving the academy’s unique problems.

Navigating perilous alliances and existential threats, players are tasked not only with protecting their friends but also guiding them through the academy’s mounting dangers.

Strong relationships offer gameplay benefits, but forming too many close bonds may bring unforeseen repercussions. A standout feature of Varlet is its Triad Stats system, a dynamic character progression mechanic divided between Light and Dark Triad attributes.

These six unique stats allow players to tailor their character’s moral alignment and skillset: Light Triad traits encourage empathy, selflessness, and morality, while Dark Triad attributes embrace Machiavellian opportunism, psychopathy, and narcissism.

Choices made throughout the narrative have a direct impact on dialogue options, relationships, and passive battle abilities, allowing for a deeply personalized RPG journey. With its international release coming to Nintendo Switch on August 28, 2025, Varlet aims to captivate RPG fans with its innovative mechanics, atmospheric storytelling, and nuanced exploration of human nature.
