Description

RetroTINK, the renowned developer of upscaling hardware beloved by retro gaming enthusiasts, has announced a temporary halt on all US-bound shipments.

The decision comes in response to recent tariff policy shifts initiated by the US government, which have created significant uncertainties for electronics makers—especially those importing goods from China.

The move has direct implications for thousands of US-based collectors and retro hardware aficionados who rely on products like the RetroTINK for enjoying classic consoles on modern displays, including through platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and a variety of legacy systems. RetroTINK’s founder, Mike Chi, confirmed on April 23rd that, due to a lack of clear instructions from US authorities regarding the collection of tariffs on imports starting May 2nd, the company would suspend all non-expedited US orders effective immediately, with April 28th marking the final date for expedited shipments.

Chi explained, through a statement, "Due to the absence of definitive procedures, there is a heightened risk of shipment delays and potential lost packages.

As soon as we have clarity on pre-paying tariffs on behalf of our customers, we will promptly resume our US operations.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." Chi further emphasized that there is no need for panic purchases, as some reserve stock remains available within the United States.

However, he acknowledged the general unpredictability of the situation, adding that while RetroTINK anticipates a resolution in the future, it cannot provide a timeline for when shipments might normalize.

"We remain optimistic that this issue will eventually be resolved, but currently, no one can say exactly when or how," he stated in a measured tone. Importantly, these changes only impact US customers.

Chi noted, "Our service to customers outside of the United States continues as usual, unaffected by the recent policy changes.” This assurance comes as international retro gaming communities continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to RetroTINK products and other niche hardware essential for experiencing and preserving classic video games. This is not the first instance of global trade policy impacting the gaming industry.

Earlier adjustments to US import tariffs, notably the fluctuating rates and exemptions applied to Chinese-manufactured electronics, have caused considerable uncertainty for many hardware and accessory developers.

Though some products, such as smartphones and computers, saw exemptions, the landscape remains volatile, and industry leaders like Mike Chi must adapt their business strategies accordingly. RetroTINK’s hardware—widely praised for its ease of use and sharp image output on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and legacy consoles—has earned a devoted following among retro gaming fans.

As the broader industry navigates trade uncertainty and logistics hurdles, RetroTINK’s transparent communication and commitment to product availability provides a model for other developers facing similar pressures in a fluctuating global market.
