Tetris 99 Grand Prix Event Celebrates Pokémon Sword and Shield Release on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch players can look forward to a new themed event as the ninth Tetris 99 Grand Prix is set to launch next week, coinciding with the much-anticipated release of Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

Tetris 99, developed by Arika and available exclusively via the Nintendo eShop, continues to engage its global player base with special in-game challenges and rewards tied to major Nintendo releases. The upcoming Tetris 99 Grand Prix event is scheduled to run from Thursday, November 7, at 11:00 PM Pacific Time until Monday, November 11, at 10:59 PM Pacific Time.

During this four-day event, participants who earn 100 event points by actively playing and competing in Tetris 99 matches will unlock a limited-time in-game theme inspired by Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

This exclusive theme revamps the visual design of the core puzzle gameplay, imbuing it with vibrant graphics and sounds reflective of the new Pokémon adventures that debut on the Nintendo Switch. A spokesperson for Nintendo stated that the event is designed to "bring together the excitement of competitive puzzle gameplay with the iconic visual flair of the Pokémon world, celebrating a major milestone release on the Nintendo Switch platform." Tetris 99 has enjoyed considerable popularity since its launch, leveraging its battle royale-style mechanics to attract a dedicated following among Nintendo Switch Online members.

Events like the Grand Prix series are a key part of its content strategy, rewarding players with unique themes and features tied to notable first-party and third-party Nintendo franchises. Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, are among the most anticipated Nintendo Switch exclusives of the year, set to release globally on November 15, 2019.

These titles mark the first mainline Pokémon role-playing games to arrive on a home console, further expanding the platform’s appeal. Players interested in participating in the Tetris 99 Grand Prix Pokémon event can access the game through the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch.

To unlock the special Pokémon Sword and Shield theme, competitors must accumulate 100 event points before the event concludes.

This initiative highlights Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to keeping its multiplayer communities active and engaged through creative cross-promotional activities and exclusive content.
