Fake Lobster and publisher Kinetic Publishing have confirmed that Shellbound, a new parasitic Metroidvania, is in development for Nintendo Switch 2 and will launch digitally on the Nintendo eShop worldwide in Summer 2028.

The announcement highlights a distinctive biological setting and a core mechanic built around possession and evolution.

Shellbound places players in the role of a parasite traveling on the back of a titanic, godlike snail.

The game frames the snail's anatomy as a living labyrinth: organs and tissues become interconnected levels, and the creature's biology can reconfigure paths and hazards as you progress.

According to the developer statements, the in-game world reacts to player choices—repeatedly eliminating a particular enemy type can trigger evolutionary adaptations that alter their behavior and unlock new parasite abilities on subsequent encounters.

Central gameplay pillars outlined by Kinetic Publishing include:

- Parasite Power: Take control of enemies and some NPCs to borrow unique movement, combat, and traversal skills for platforming, puzzles, and boss fights.

- Enemy Evolution: Eliminating a threshold number of a creature type can cause that species to evolve into stronger, sometimes radically different forms, affecting future playthroughs.

- Biome Transformation: The snail's living anatomy produces a mutable environment that changes in response to player actions.

- A New Kind of Metroidvania: Shellbound aims to expand the genre by letting players circumvent traditional gating systems through creative use of captured enemy abilities.

Fake Lobster co-founder Eric Frantzen said the studio set out to build the kind of game they themselves enjoy playing: an exploration-focused experience full of secrets that centers on the team's parasitic twist.

Co-founder Nils Klatt described Shellbound as a labor of love and noted that Kinetic Publishing's support has allowed Fake Lobster to commit to full-time development and pursue the studio's original vision.

The game is positioned as a next-generation Metroidvania for Nintendo Switch 2, and the Summer 2028 Nintendo eShop release will be digital-only at launch.

Fans of exploration-driven 2D action and players interested in emergent world systems should watch Shellbound's upcoming marketing and the developer's further updates for platform-specific details and trailer releases.
