Top Hat Studios and development partner Slime King Games have officially released Under the Island, an action-adventure title inspired by the classic games of the 1990s, on the Nintendo Switch.
Launched on the Nintendo eShop as a digital download, Under the Island taps into nostalgia with its vibrant pixel art, charming cast, and inventive gameplay mechanics.
This marks another notable addition to the Nintendo Switch's celebrated library of indie action-adventure games. Under the Island invites players to forge their own path across the enigmatic Seashell Island, uncovering secrets and solving mysteries along the way.
As players take on the role of Nia—a newcomer to the island—they join forces with Avocado, a local resident, to unravel an ancient fate threatening their new home: the impending submersion of Seashell Island beneath the ocean’s waves. "We wanted to create an adventure that captures the spirit of discovery and whimsy found in 90s titles, while introducing fresh mechanics and a world brimming with personality," a representative from Top Hat Studios shared in a recent launch statement.
The result is a top-down exploration experience where every nook and cranny rewards curiosity, from monumental landmarks to concealed treasures. Under the Island features six distinct regions, each brimming with unique enemies, upgrades, and hidden secrets.
Players will journey through environments such as eerie, sentient greenhouses, frozen caverns, and bustling sawmills, each with their own challenges.
Along the way, players can participate in quirky island events—like mastering the cook-off championship, rescuing stranded cats, or thwarting the schemes of mischievous cereal pirates. Combat in Under the Island is defined by inventive tactics and unconventional tools.
Players wield tools including a shovel, a trumpet, and even a helpful bird to navigate the landscape, solve puzzles, and overcome bizarre adversaries such as vomiting eggplants and tunneling wolves.
The game also introduces the ability to befriend island wildlife, enhancing the player's abilities during exploration and combat. Supporting its classic top-down gameplay, Under the Island is enriched by a robust cast of NPCs.
Each character on Seashell Island sports a distinct personality and backstory, fostering opportunities for friendship, teamwork, and narrative discovery. Under the Island is now available as a digital download via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch, ensuring broad accessibility for fans of pixel art adventures and retro-inspired indies.
