Limited Run Games has officially revealed that Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return will soon be released for the Nintendo Switch.
This announcement brings the acclaimed platforming sequel to a modern audience, following news that the original Tomba! is also set to launch on Nintendo Switch in August.
While Limited Run Games has yet to confirm an exact release window for Tomba 2 on the Switch, anticipation is high among fans of retro platformers and PlayStation classics.
Originally developed by Whoopee Camp and led by director Tokuro Fujiwara, Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return first debuted in Japan in 1999, with its Western release arriving in the year 2000 exclusively for the original PlayStation.
As a sequel to the cult favorite Tomba!, the game further innovated on its predecessor’s inventive mechanics, offering expanded freedom of movement, a variety of new quests, and memorable gameplay features such as the flying squirrel suit.
Tomba 2 places players in the shoes of an older, more rugged Tomba, who must brave a series of demanding challenges in pursuit of rescuing his beloved from the clutches of nefarious swine enemies.
The game is widely remembered for its unique charm, side-scrolling 2.5D visuals, and nonlinear exploration—hallmarks that helped Tomba! earn a dedicated fanbase during the late 1990s.
Limited Run Games has continued to champion beloved retro titles for modern platforms, often working closely with original developers or rights holders to faithfully restore these classic experiences.
This approach is reflected in their announcement, where they emphasized bringing Tomba 2 to a new generation of players on the Nintendo Switch.
As part of the Tomba! revival, the first installment is scheduled to arrive on the Nintendo eShop in August 2024—a move that has generated excitement within the Nintendo and PlayStation communities.
Both Tomba! and its sequel represent significant achievements for Whoopee Camp, a studio recognized for its distinct approach to platform game design under Fujiwara’s direction.
With the Switch’s continued success as a haven for classic and indie titles, the addition of Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return enhances its already rich library and offers both longtime fans and newcomers an opportunity to experience one of the PlayStation era’s standout platformers.
More details, including release timing and special editions, are expected to be shared by Limited Run Games in the coming months.
