However, the franchise is equally known for what nearly was: the absence of a Metroid title on the Nintendo 64.

Sakamoto explained that he felt he was not the right person to develop the game for the platform, and found it difficult to visualize how Metroid’s unique movement and gameplay would translate to the unconventional N64 controller.

As a result, Nintendo explored external developers to potentially take on the project.

Ultimately, the studio approached declined, expressing concerns about producing a title that could stand alongside the critically acclaimed Super Metroid.

This decision left Metroid fans without a new entry on the N64, with Samus Aran only making a cameo appearance in the original Super Smash Bros. Reviving Metroid 64 in Unity 3D The unmet desire for a Metroid N64 game has spurred several community-led projects over the years.

Among these, the Unity 3D initiative by Luto Akino stands out for its faithful recreation of what could have been.

The project, first spotlighted by Nintendo Life in 2022, is shaping up as a third-person action adventure reminiscent of classic 64-bit Nintendo titles.

Early previews highlighted the project's impressive visuals and mechanics, capturing the spirit of both Super Metroid and later 3D entries like Metroid Prime. Development Continues with New Features Since its initial reveal, Akino has continued development, integrating new features such as an enhanced auto-targeting system, updated morph ball mechanics, and additional enemy types—all designed in line with what the hardware limitations and design ethos of Nintendo 64 games would allow.

The attention to detail and iterative improvements have drawn praise from the Metroid community and long-term Nintendo fans alike. Release Date Still Unknown Despite visible progress, Luto Akino has stated that a public release remains some way off.

In recent project updates, Akino clarified that significant work remains and did not provide a specific release timeframe.
