Consolevariations Forced Into Read-Only Mode After Hack Targets Console Database

Consolevariations, the community-driven console database launched in 2018, has been placed into read-only mode after operators discovered a malicious upload that threatened the site’s infrastructure.

The catalogue, which bills itself as an extensive archive of video game hardware, lists more than 12,000 variations and hosts over 100,000 photos contributed by collectors and community members.

According to the statement issued by the site’s administrators, the incident began when a small number of images were uploaded that concealed a PHP script.

The administrator said the script appeared intended to 'massively damage' Consolevariations’ servers, prompting an immediate shutdown of write access and other protective measures.

The team confirmed that no user data was lost or disclosed during the incident.

In clear, journalistic terms, the site’s leadership explained they had to disable the site’s editing, uploading, and marketplace functions immediately after identifying the malicious files.

Their developers worked overnight to assemble a stripped-back, read-only version of Consolevariations to preserve the public archive while preventing further exploitation.

The pared-back site preserves the core catalogue so users can continue to view listings for hardware variants from modern systems such as Nintendo Switch as well as legacy platforms including Neo Geo and other manufacturers.

However, the administrators warned that the database cannot accept new submissions or photos in its current state, and some images are temporarily missing from listings.

They stated that reinstating removed images and restoring full functionality is the team’s priority over the coming weeks.

Community response has been proactive: several members have already offered financial support to cover redevelopment and server costs.

The administrators expressed gratitude for that backing and for the development team's rapid response.

Reporting on the incident was carried by Time Extension, where Damien McFerran oversees editorial content.

For collectors and industry observers, the Consolevariations outage is a reminder of the dependence of online archives on robust security and active maintenance.

Consolevariations remains available in read-only form while its operators work to return the site to full operation.
