Smallthing Studios Sets Sights on 1993 Amiga Classic with Simon the Sorcerer Remake, Targeting 2026 Release
The point-and-click adventure genre is enjoying a spirited resurgence, and leading the charge is Italian developer Smallthing Studios.
Following the recent launch of Simon the Sorcerer: Origins, a prequel to the acclaimed Adventure Soft series, Smallthing Studios has announced plans to remake the original 1993 Simon the Sorcerer game.
This highly anticipated project is scheduled for release in 2026, solidifying the studio's commitment to revitalizing one of adventure gaming’s most cherished franchises.
Simon the Sorcerer: Origins made its debut in May 2024, launching across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Mac, and Linux.
The release was met with encouraging reviews from both fans and critics, underscoring the enduring appeal of the whimsical fantasy series created by Adventure Soft.
Reception from reputable gaming outlets showcases the warm welcome Origins has received.
Nintendo Life rated the Nintendo Switch version a solid 7 out of 10, highlighting its “genuine humor” and “faithful charm carried over from its predecessors,” while praising the “intuitive controls that adapt well to modern hardware.” However, the review noted that character animations occasionally appear stiff and that some of the game’s puzzles could stretch players’ logic beyond comfort.
Xbox Era also contributed a positive 8 out of 10 score for the Xbox version, applauding the “rock-solid return to classic adventure form” and commending the game's voice acting and wit.
The site did point out that the shift to hand-drawn visuals comes at the expense of the pixel-art detail many nostalgic fans cherished in the original release.
Encouraged by the largely favorable reception of Origins, Smallthing Studios is now channeling resources into a full-scale remake of the 1993 Simon the Sorcerer, with plans to launch across modern platforms, including Nintendo Switch and other current-generation consoles.
In a recent interview with IGN Italy, studio representatives confirmed their ambition to bring the magic of the Amiga classic to a new generation of players by blending faithful narrative recreation with contemporary visual and audio enhancements.
To mark the announcement, Smallthing Studios unveiled the first teaser image from the upcoming remake, showing their newly reimagined Simon standing before the iconic sleeping Giant in the mountains—a memorable encounter from the original game that fans still fondly recall.
With Smallthing Studios’ proven dedication to the Simon the Sorcerer legacy, and the franchise’s recent revival gaining momentum, adventure game aficionados and Nintendo Switch players alike can look forward to a lovingly crafted remake that will honor and enrich the Adventure Soft heritage when it lands in 2026.
