Vodafone J-Sky Metal Slug (2003) Rescued — Lost Neo Geo Mobile Port Now Playable on PC

The 2003 Vodafone J-Sky port of Metal Slug — a long-forgotten mobile adaptation of SNK’s 1996 Neo Geo classic — has been recovered and made playable on PC by mobile preservationists.

Metal Slug originally debuted on the Neo Geo AES and MVS in 1996 and has since been reissued across modern platforms, appearing in digital releases and compilations for systems including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4.

The Vodafone J-Sky release, however, remained largely obscure until recent archival work.

According to contemporaneous coverage, the Vodafone J-Sky / Vodafone Live! version was released in Japan in 2003 and was shown at the Tokyo Game Show, where it was described as a scaled-down adaptation of the NEOGEO title with reduced character sprites to suit mobile displays while retaining much of the original content.

The title received little subsequent documentation in Japanese or English sources and was omitted from some modern lists of the game’s other versions.

Preservation efforts spearheaded through the Keitai Wiki Discord community produced a playable build of the Vodafone J-Sky Metal Slug.

A community member known as Cuebus is credited with rescuing the title from obscurity and enabling it to run on contemporary hardware.

The recovered build has been made accessible via the Keitai World Launcher, a platform used by mobile-game preservationists to run legacy Japanese feature-phone software on PC.

Footage of the recovered port has circulated online.

A social media post from user RockmanCosmo described the Vodafone J-Sky release as a simpler interpretation of the original Metal Slug that uses small, compact sprites to suit mobile screens while preserving the core gameplay and levels.

Musician Chromadeline, who commented on a shared clip, said the mobile adaptation is unexpectedly faithful to the source material and demonstrates careful work within the platform’s limitations.

Additional gameplay videos are available from YouTuber Mr^Burns, offering a closer look at the port’s altered level layouts and audio.

This recovery highlights ongoing efforts to document and preserve often-overlooked mobile ports of console and arcade classics.

For readers interested in trying the title, the rescued Vodafone J-Sky Metal Slug build is currently playable on PC using the Keitai World Launcher.

For broader context, SNK’s Metal Slug remains one of the company’s most enduring franchises since its 1996 Neo Geo debut and continues to appear in retro compilations and digital storefronts across modern platforms.
