The Posthumous Investigation Announced for Nintendo Switch: Mother Gaia Studio Brings Noir Time-Loop Mystery to eShop

Mother Gaia Studio Announces The Posthumous Investigation for Nintendo Switch Release Mother Gaia Studio, an award-winning indie developer, officially revealed today that their highly anticipated noir time-loop murder mystery, The Posthumous Investigation, is coming to Nintendo Switch.

The development team is actively working on the Nintendo Switch port, with a formal release date to be confirmed as production progresses.

This marks the first appearance of the title on any console, expanding its reach beyond PC and onto Nintendo’s popular hybrid platform via the eShop. Released initially on PC, The Posthumous Investigation transports players to a stylized 1937 Rio de Janeiro, drawing inspiration from the atmospheric storytelling of Film Noir and the satirical writings of celebrated author Machado de Assis.

The game stands apart for its unique premise: players take on the role of a private investigator hired by the ghost of his own murder victim, Brás Cubas.

Trapped in a purgatorial time loop, players must solve the mystery of Cubas’ death, using deduction and repeated attempts to piece together the truth behind the crime. Bruno Toledo, director at Mother Gaia Studio, provided insight into the project: "We set out to create a detective game where the city and era become a puzzle in themselves.

By interweaving a time-loop mechanic with the satirical, richly detailed world of Machado de Assis, we’re encouraging players to engage in true investigative thinking—every failed loop becomes a stepping stone towards the solution." Gameplay in The Posthumous Investigation draws favorable comparisons to titles such as Return of the Obra Dinn, blending detailed deduction systems with a lovingly hand-drawn noir visual style.

Players have a single day—endlessly repeatable—to shadow 14 suspects across a vibrant 1930s Rio.

Each suspect’s routine provides fresh leads and contradicting alibis; players use their "Thinking Board" to physically connect clues, reconstruct timelines, and identify the perpetrator through logical deduction, rather than guided prompts or automated hints. Critically praised for its literary ambition and innovative mechanics, the game stands as a testament to Mother Gaia Studio’s commitment to both narrative depth and accessible investigation.

The writing draws heavily from the wit and moral ambiguity of its literary inspiration, ensuring no character—including the client/victim—is immune from suspicion.

The result is an experience where the setting, suspects, and systems combine into a tightly woven gameplay loop. While a specific launch window for the Nintendo Switch version has yet to be announced, its confirmed development brings The Posthumous Investigation to the attention of millions of Switch players globally.

Fans can look forward to immersive detective gameplay on-the-go, detailed 2D visuals tailored for the platform, and full access via the Nintendo eShop at launch. Stay tuned to official Nintendo Directs and the Mother Gaia Studio website for updates, trailer releases, and the eventual Nintendo Switch eShop debut of The Posthumous Investigation.
