Catacomb 3-D, the innovative first-person shooter developed by id Software and originally launched in 1991, is returning to PC with a newly announced big-box physical release.
Recognized as a forerunner in the FPS genre, Catacomb 3-D’s influence can be traced directly to later classics like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
The latest announcement allows fans and collectors to secure limited-edition physical versions of this historic title, now available for pre-order.
Developed by id Software and first published by Softdisk for DOS, Catacomb 3-D marked a pivotal moment in gaming history.
Building on designer John Carmack’s earlier work with games such as Catacomb and Catacomb II, the title introduced technological and gameplay innovations that would define first-person shooters.
Notably, Catacomb 3-D allowed players to assume the role of a magical protagonist exploring the perilous dungeons of the lich Grelminar, and pioneered techniques like the on-screen health indicator that visually changed as the player sustained damage—an idea that would become standard in the genre.
The new physical release of Catacomb 3-D was confirmed by id Software co-founder John Romero earlier this week on his official social media channels.
Three collector’s editions are offered at staggered price points, each catering to varying levels of enthusiasm among fans and retro game collectors:
- The Shallow Grave Edition (€69.95): This edition comes in a specially designed box signed by John Romero.
Included are a USB stick with the full game, a making-of video, a detailed History of Catacomb 3-D PDF written by gaming historian David L.
Craddock, plus bonus items such as pins, stickers, a poster, and a cinch-bag referencing Catacomb 3-D imagery.
- The Stone Tomb Edition (€89.95): In addition to all contents of the Shallow Grave Edition, purchasers receive a genuine 3.5” floppy disk, further elevating the collector’s value.
- The Ancient Vault Edition (€154.95): Designed for ultimate collectors, this version features everything from the previous editions, supplemented by a limited Catacomb 3-D t-shirt and a classic 5.25” floppy disk—a nod to the golden era of PC gaming.
Catacomb 3-D was notable for its technical ambitions, taking inspiration from titles like Ultima Underworld (reportedly while that game was still yet to be released), and set the stage for John Carmack and id Software's future breakthroughs in 3D gaming.
Its place in video game history is assured, and this big-box re-release provides an opportunity for both longtime fans and new players to experience a foundational work in the first-person shooter genre.
This collector’s reissue reflects the enduring legacy and demand for well-preserved, physical editions of classic DOS games.
For those interested in the history of PC gaming or the origins of the FPS genre, securing a copy of Catacomb 3-D’s big-box edition is an ideal way to own a tangible piece of gaming history.
Pre-orders for all editions are now open through official channels.
With strong interest expected among retro PC enthusiasts and collectors, fans are encouraged to secure their copies early.
