The Day I Became a Bird Announced for Nintendo Switch: Release Date, Story, and Details

Numskull Games and Hyper Luminal Games have officially announced the upcoming release of The Day I Became a Bird on the Nintendo Switch, with the launch set for April 16, 2026.

Developed in collaboration with UK-based Hyper Luminal Games and animation studio Passion Animation, this title expands the Switch's narrative adventure lineup with a unique storybook-inspired experience.

The Day I Became a Bird stands out as a heartfelt narrative adventure, drawing deep inspiration from children’s literature and animated storytelling.

The game is based on the acclaimed storybook by French author Ingrid Chabbert and Spanish illustrator Guridi, as well as an accompanying animated short film by Passion Animation.

By merging the visual sensibilities of the graphic novel with gentle interactive elements, the team aims to offer a warm, contemplative alternative to conventional fast-paced games.

Players step into the shoes of Frank, a reserved child experiencing his first crush on Sylvia — a classmate who adores birds.

Guided by handcrafted visuals and painterly environments, players navigate school life, playground adventures, and imaginative spaces as Frank explores themes of love, self-expression, and vulnerability.

Gameplay focuses on exploration, collection, and light puzzle-solving, all designed to evoke the innocence and emotional resonance of first love.

The partnership between Passion Animation and Hyper Luminal Games has resulted in an accessible, narrative-forward game where the emphasis lies on mood, movement, and emotional clarity.

The game's aesthetic is reminiscent of stepping into a live picture book, with carefully crafted art and animation enhancing the storytelling experience.

The developers note that The Day I Became a Bird invites players of all ages to engage with the world through curiosity, transformation, and the gentle aspiration to soar "like a bird."

Andrew Ruhemann, founder and CEO of Passion Animation, reflected on the creative ambition behind the title: "From the outset, our intention was to capture the feeling of love before you have the words for it.

We sought to create an experience akin to entering a picture book, where subtle emotions and quiet moments carry as much significance as the plot itself."

Author Ingrid Chabbert added that the transition from book to game brings new dimensions to the story.

"Frank’s journey has always been about the brave desire to be noticed by someone special.

Watching his world come alive interactively allows players to not only read about these emotions but truly inhabit them—experiencing the intimacy, awkwardness, and understated courage of first love in a uniquely immersive way."

The Day I Became a Bird will be available digitally on the Nintendo Switch eShop at launch, priced at $19.99 / £12.99 / €14.99.

For fans seeking a comprehensive experience, the Feathered Adventurer Edition offers the game, the animated film, a digital art book, and the original soundtrack for $24.49 / £17.99 / €19.99.

This release enriches the Switch's indie library with an emotive, story-driven offering, and demonstrates the continuing innovation from studios like Hyper Luminal Games and Passion Animation.
