The studio confirmed the title will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 18, 2026, and provided detailed descriptions of the early-era setting, principal characters, and Faie’s magic systems ahead of release.
Age of Budding: setting and stakes
The Age of Budding represents the earliest chronological period in Elliot and Faie’s journey, positioned at the dawn of civilization in the world of Philabieldia.
Humans have begun crafting weapons to defend against beast tribes, while a unique group called the Myū can both speak the human tongue and wield powerful magic.
Square Enix frames this era as a pivotal moment where humanity must decide whether the Myū’s power is salvation or a new threat.
Key characters and voice cast
Square Enix introduced three central figures in Hitoyori and the Myū.
Kai, voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese) and Brandon McInnis (English), is the young chief determined to protect his settlement and wary of the Myū and their magic.
Hirk, voiced by Yukana (Japanese) and Nadia Marshall (English), has studied magic for years and seeks to bridge relations with the Myū to secure the village’s future.
Lyudmila, voiced by Mamiko Noto (Japanese) and Allegra Clark (English), is a Myū native who teaches magic to humans and exemplifies relentless hope in the face of hardship.
Faie’s Magic and gameplay systems
Square Enix detailed Faie’s Magic, which centers on Shrines of the Mystic scattered across Philabieldia where Faie learns new abilities.
Faie’s spells are designed for environmental puzzles and combat.
Ignite lets Faie set torches, melt ice, and detonate explosives, while Vacuum draws items and enemies into a vortex for repositioning or pickup.
A copy spell can mirror Elliot’s movements, duplicating thrown items and enabling complex problem solving.
Combat synergy and magicite
The developer emphasized combining Elliot’s attacks with Faie’s magic and experimenting with magicite modifiers.
For example, bomb magicite increases explosive power but delays detonation; Ignite can trigger those enhanced bombs on demand.
Throw magicite adds additional boomerangs to Elliot’s attacks, and Faie’s copy can multiply those projectiles further.
Square Enix’s Age of Budding update complements earlier information drops covering the Age of Reconstruction and the Age of Magic, and arrives alongside a playable demo and new screenshots on the Nintendo eShop.
The full game is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 18, 2026.
