Under a Killing Moon, the 1994 FMV detective adventure from Access Software, is receiving a full remake built in Unreal Engine 5 and funded via Kickstarter.

The project, announced on the campaign page, aims to bring the Tex Murphy series' third entry into a modern, explorable first-person experience on PC with a physical big-box edition also planned.

The remake is being developed with the blessing and direct involvement of original designers Aaron Conners and Chris Jones.

Jones, who originally portrayed Tex Murphy, is listed as the project's chief financial officer, and original artist Douglas Vandegrift is participating alongside a younger development team.

According to the Kickstarter campaign, the team set an initial $50,000 goal and has raised $381,937 with just over 30 hours left in the drive.

Campaign materials explain the rationale for a remake: returning to the original is difficult for many players due to dated graphics and controls, fragmented navigation, limited video quality from 1994 capture technology, and locations that were only implied through FMV.

The developers say the remake will let players physically explore locations that the 1994 game previously only suggested through FMV sequences, while preserving the original's personality and visual design.

Technically, the team plans to rebuild environments from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, implement modern first-person controls, and upscale original performances from digitized 1994 tapes to HD and 2K resolutions.

The Kickstarter also promises new minigames, additional pickups, weather effects, and other enhancements.

A playable demo of Act 1 is already available to backers.

Backer tiers include a $30 "P.I." tier for a digital copy, and a $130 Big Box tier featuring a full-color manual, poster, postcards, GOG and Steam download codes, and a professionally produced Blu-ray disc with full-color CMYK printing.

For players who prefer the original, the 1994 version of Under a Killing Moon is currently available on GOG and Steam, where it has periodically appeared in sales.

The Tex Murphy series has historically been PC-focused, with re-releases appearing on storefronts such as GOG and Steam.

The Kickstarter and campaign details list PC as the target platform for the remake; no Nintendo Switch or eShop release has been announced on the campaign page.
