Tetris 99 47th Maximus Cup Brings Back Fan-Favorite Themes on Nintendo Switch

In an exciting update for fans of competitive puzzle games, Nintendo has announced that Tetris 99 will host its 47th Maximus Cup from June 27 to June 30, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Developed by Arika, Tetris 99 has remained a staple in the online multiplayer scene since its surprise debut during a Nintendo Direct in February 2019.

The upcoming Maximus Cup event delivers a unique twist—not by introducing a new theme, but by offering players another opportunity to earn four previously released, fan-favorite themes. This 47th Maximus Cup is set to celebrate Tetris 99’s ongoing community engagement by reintroducing signature event themes based on some of Nintendo’s most acclaimed titles.

In a statement from Nintendo, the company detailed that players who missed earlier opportunities can now unlock themes inspired by Super Mario Bros.

Wonder, Splatoon 3 and its Expansion Pass, Pikmin 4, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.

With only 20 event points required to obtain each theme, securing these popular designs is now more accessible than ever. The event is structured as four consecutive rounds, each dedicated to a different theme: Round 1: Super Mario Bros.

Wonder Round 2: Splatoon 3 and Splatoon 3 Expansion Pass paid DLC Round 3: Pikmin 4 Round 4: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Players will earn event points based on their performance in standard online matches.

Once the 20-point threshold is met for a round, the corresponding theme will be unlocked and permanently added to the player’s collection.

The Maximus Cup event window kicks off on June 27 at 12 AM PT (3 AM ET) and runs until June 30 at 11:59 PM PT (July 1 at 2:59 AM ET), giving participants ample time to collect all four returning themes. Since launch, Tetris 99 has become renowned for its special events and tie-ins with high-profile Nintendo franchises.

Wonder and Splatoon 3 demonstrates Nintendo’s commitment to celebrating its first-party titles within ongoing service games.

The game itself is available as a free download for Nintendo Switch Online members via the Nintendo eShop, offering both solo and multiplayer modes.
