Hollow Knight: Silksong Release Date Confirmed for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 – Team Cherry Explains Extended Development
After years of intense anticipation, Team Cherry has officially confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch for Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, 2025.
The announcement puts an end to years of speculation, cementing a concrete arrival date for one of indie gaming's most eagerly awaited sequels.
Developed by the Australian indie studio Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Silksong serves as the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight, which became a standout title on platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
Since its initial reveal in 2019, Silksong has garnered widespread attention for its ambitious scope and the promise of expanding on the metroidvania formula that defined its predecessor.
Following the official announcement, Team Cherry co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen spoke with Bloomberg, offering a detailed look into the prolonged development timeline of Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Gibson addressed the concerns regarding the delay, stating that the creative process at Team Cherry has been consistently enjoyable and that the game was always in steady development.
He explained, "For us, Hollow Knight: Silksong provided a continuous source of creativity.
Progress was never stalled; as a small team, it simply took significant time to bring our vision to life."
Gibson also highlighted that the studio’s decision to avoid frequent project updates was intentional, suggesting that persistent status reports would have only led to mounting frustration within the community.
"We recognized that repeatedly telling fans we were still working on the game might have dampened their enthusiasm or spoiled surprises.
So, we chose to work quietly," he remarked.
William Pellen, Team Cherry co-founder, noted that the original plan was for a much shorter development cycle.
"Initially, we thought we’d go silent for maybe one or two years, then release the game," Pellen said.
"There were even times when I believed we were just a year away from completion."
Team Cherry emphasized that diligence for detail and a desire for polish were key reasons for the extended timeline.
Notably, Bloomberg reported that Hollow Knight: Silksong will deliver "more elaborate bosses, expanded gameplay systems, and greater interactivity" than its predecessor.
According to Gibson and Pellen, integrating new features—such as having in-game objects react dynamically to protagonist Hornet’s expanding arsenal—required an exceptional level of animation and design work.
Reflecting on team morale, Gibson commented, "In retrospect, we always tend to underestimate the time and effort needed to realize our goals.
But because we genuinely enjoy building this world, taking extra time was never a burden.
If anything, it fueled more creative ideas."
Now, with just a few weeks left until launch, Hollow Knight: Silksong is poised to make its debut on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
