Tales of Series Producer Reflects on Remaster Release Challenges and Future Plans

Bandai Namco’s acclaimed RPG franchise, the Tales of series, has long held a devoted fan base, with classic titles regularly topping wishlists for remasters on modern hardware like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation platforms.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Tales of series producer Yusuke Tomizawa shed light on the complexities the development team faced when attempting to re-release the beloved games in their original chronological order. Remastering classic titles is no simple feat.

Tomizawa confirmed that the team initially intended to bring back the Tales of games following the sequence of their original release, a decision rooted in preserving the experience for long-time fans and historical accuracy.

However, Tomizawa recounted that this approach led to unforeseen difficulties, which, while unspecified, caused significant delays in the release pipeline.

"There was a period where adhering strictly to chronological order prevented us from releasing any titles at all.

It's a particularly frustrating memory for us," the producer shared in paraphrased remarks to Famitsu. Recognizing the stalemate, Bandai Namco pivoted its strategy.

Tomizawa noted, "Although it would have been ideal to remaster the series in release order, evaluating which titles had the highest potential for success allowed us to make meaningful progress." By prioritizing games that garnered the most interest or feasibility, the development team was able to provide fans with remastered versions at a more consistent pace.

Titles such as Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition have performed strongly on digital storefronts like the Nintendo eShop, reaffirming the franchise’s ongoing appeal. Tomizawa emphasized that fan demand is central to the remaster process.

The producer explained, “Fan requests remain our best indicator for which games to revisit.

The recent announcement of Tales of Graces F remaster, for example, reflected our overall assessment of player feedback.” This community-oriented approach allows Bandai Namco to balance historical continuity with player enthusiasm and market realities, ensuring that resources are allocated to projects with the most substantial support. Looking ahead, Tomizawa confirmed that the Tales of development team is actively "reaching new milestones toward a forthcoming title," with the goal of delivering a major announcement in the near future.

This update will be closely followed not only by RPG fans, but also by industry analysts eager to see how the storied franchise evolves in an era defined by the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and an expanding digital marketplace. As the Tales of series continues to grow, Tomizawa and Bandai Namco’s commitment to listening to their audience and overcoming development challenges remains crucial.

With strong sales numbers for past remasters and renewed excitement for future entries, the franchise is poised to maintain its legacy for years to come.
