Nintendo Switch 2 Sets Console Launch Record with Over 10 Million Units Sold
In a milestone that cements its place in gaming history, Nintendo has revealed in its latest financial results report that the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an impressive 10.36 million units as of the end of September 2025.
This achievement surpasses the launch numbers of iconic consoles, including the original Nintendo Switch (4.7 million), PlayStation 4 (7.5 million), and PlayStation 5 (7.8 million) for comparable time frames.
The unprecedented success makes the Nintendo Switch 2 the biggest console launch to date.
The Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the immensely popular Nintendo Switch, launched to high expectations and has now far exceeded even the most optimistic forecasts.
Leveraging a diverse launch lineup, improved hardware capabilities, and a robust digital marketplace via the Nintendo eShop, the Switch 2 is rapidly becoming a dominant force in the current hardware generation.
Following the release of these sales figures, Nintendo has revised its forecast for the console’s first full business year.
Initially projecting 15 million units sold by next March, the company now anticipates Switch 2 unit sales to reach 19 million—a substantial increase prompted by overwhelming demand.
Moreover, Nintendo expects a 15% rise in profits, estimating approximately $2.4 billion in earnings, with guidance factoring in existing US tariffs.
A breakdown of regional demand highlights the Switch 2’s global appeal: 35% of sales have come from the Americas (including North and South America), while 22.6% are attributed to Japan.
As reported by Bloomberg, Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Securities, stated that surpassing 10 million units sold in just the first half of the fiscal year significantly exceeded market expectations.
Yasuda noted, “Given that second-half sales—driven by the holiday season—tend to meet or exceed the first half, it would not be surprising to see Nintendo raise its estimates again.”
Meanwhile, Dr.
Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, shared his outlook with VGC.
According to Toto, the exceptional demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 was foreseeable.
He explained, “It’s not surprising for me.
There’s always been clear, pent-up demand for Switch 2 hardware.
My projection has remained consistent around 20 million units by the end of the fiscal year, and Nintendo’s initial forecast was characteristically conservative.” Toto further suggested that anticipated releases like Pokémon Legends: Z-A will sustain the console’s momentum into 2026, with additional marquee titles planned throughout 2025.
Industry analyst Mat Piscatella has also commented on Nintendo’s apparent intention to further embrace digital distribution with the Switch 2.
Looking ahead, reports indicate that Nintendo has instructed suppliers to prepare production for roughly 25 million units by the close of March 2026.
This substantial ramp-up highlights Nintendo’s confidence in the ongoing appeal and success of the Switch 2 platform.
In recognition of its innovative impact, Time Magazine has named the Nintendo Switch 2 one of 2025’s best inventions.
The system’s remarkable sales figures underscore a launch for the record books, positioning the Switch 2 as a defining platform for Nintendo and the wider gaming industry.
