Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Classics has received a significant upgrade on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 platforms with the release of Version 4.0.0.
This update, which went live on June 4, 2025, marks a new chapter for Nintendo's classic game emulation efforts and reaffirms the company's commitment to enhancing the gaming experience for its online subscribers.
Initially introduced as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack in October 2021, the Nintendo 64 app has allowed a new generation of players to access some of the most iconic titles in the company’s history.
Now officially rebranded as 'Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Classics,' the app includes improvements designed to bring retro gaming features up to modern standards, ensuring both nostalgia and accessibility for longtime fans and new players alike.
The headline features of the Version 4.0.0 update include the highly anticipated ability to remap and view control layouts within the app.
Players can now customize button configurations to suit their preferences, a first for Nintendo 64 emulation on Nintendo’s hardware.
In addition, the app introduces a gameplay rewind mechanic, enabling users to quickly reverse mistakes and perfect their playthroughs.
This rewind feature is user-friendly and smoothly integrated into the app’s interface, following the example set by previous retro collections.
Another standout addition exclusive to the Switch 2 version is the CRT filter.
This visual setting emulates the look and feel of classic cathode-ray tube televisions, reproducing the authentic aesthetic of playing Nintendo 64 games in their original era.
Both the control remapping and CRT filter can be accessed through the updated in-app menu, and compatibility details have been shared in Nintendo’s latest showcase video.
A Nintendo representative emphasized, "With these new features, we're continuing our mission to celebrate and preserve Nintendo’s legacy, while making classic games more accessible and enjoyable than ever before."
Since its original launch, the Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Classics app has steadily grown in popularity, expanding its lineup to include fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and Mario Kart 64.
The app’s ongoing evolution reflects Nintendo’s ongoing dedication to digital preservation and the user experience across both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 systems.
Gamers can download the latest update via the Nintendo eShop or access it directly if automatic updates are enabled.
The Version 4.0.0 rollout demonstrates Nintendo’s strategy of continuous improvement for its online services and ensures that Nintendo 64 classics can be enjoyed with modern convenience and enhancements on current hardware.
