Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero Receive Enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Editions with Free Upgrade

Unknown Worlds Entertainment Delivers Subnautica and Below Zero Enhanced Editions for Nintendo Switch 2 Unknown Worlds Entertainment, the acclaimed studio behind the Subnautica franchise, is set to launch upgraded editions of both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero for Nintendo Switch 2.

According to reliable sources including Nintendo Everything and Nintenduo, these enhanced versions will be available starting February 17, 2026.

Players who currently own either title on Nintendo Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 Editions at no additional cost, marking a customer-friendly move as the price for standalone Switch 2 versions has not yet been disclosed. The new Switch 2 versions offer significant technical improvements.

When playing docked, users can experience both underwater survival games in 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second.

In handheld mode, performance is boosted to 1080p and 60fps, dramatically improving the visual clarity and smoothness compared to the original Switch versions.

Additionally, developers have "optimized" the controls specifically for Nintendo Switch 2, potentially introducing new features and improved responsiveness tailored to the updated hardware. Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero originally debuted on Nintendo Switch in May 2021, garnering critical acclaim for their immersive environments and survival mechanics set on the mysterious water world of planet 4546B.

These Nintendo Switch-exclusive editions combine both titles, allowing fans to fully explore alien oceans and icy biomes.

Players craft equipment, pilot submarines, build underwater habitats, and outsmart predatory wildlife, all while surviving the planet’s hostile conditions and unraveling its enigmatic history. Core gameplay features include resource gathering, tool crafting, base construction, and exploration of diverse biomes across both lush coral reefs and treacherous frozen landscapes.

The narrative-driven experience requires players to investigate clues about planet 4546B’s past and adapt to evolving threats in dynamic aquatic environments. Despite the upcoming release of Subnautica 2 in Early Access scheduled for 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 is not among the confirmed platforms for the sequel.

The game's publisher, Krafton—which acquired Unknown Worlds in 2022—has recently faced legal disputes with the development studio and drawn criticism for its new focus as an “AI first” company. With these enhanced editions, Unknown Worlds Entertainment reinforces its commitment to supporting the Nintendo community and providing cutting-edge upgrades for the Switch 2 era.

Players interested in exploring the depths of Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero with improved performance and controls can look forward to the free upgrade rollout on February 17.
