SteamWorld: Tower Defense, the pioneering entry in Thunderful Group's acclaimed SteamWorld series, has officially been delisted from the Nintendo 3DS eShop following Nintendo's recent discontinuation of digital storefront services for the platform.
Originally launched as a DSiWare title in 2010, SteamWorld: Tower Defense holds a significant place in indie gaming history and marks the first appearance of the now globally recognized SteamWorld franchise.
Nintendo's closure of the 3DS eShop, which took effect in late March 2023, has not only affected players but also left developers and publishers reflecting on the legacy of their digital exclusives.
In a recent interview with 'Kit & Krysta,' Thunderful Group co-founder and SteamWorld series creator Brjann Sigurgeirsson expressed his disappointment over the loss of availability for the original title.
"Seeing SteamWorld: Tower Defense leave the eShop is disheartening, especially knowing 3DS owners no longer have access to our debut game," Sigurgeirsson stated.
Thunderful had considered porting SteamWorld: Tower Defense to modern platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
However, Sigurgeirsson confirmed that, due to the studio's current workload and ongoing development on multiple projects, a Nintendo Switch version is not in active development.
"We discussed bringing the game to Switch or a similar platform, but our schedules simply don't permit it at this time.
It's sad to see it transition from being a rarely downloaded game to one that's now unavailable to everyone," he explained.
Despite these challenges, Sigurgeirsson remained optimistic about the possibility of a future revival, noting that ports are something he would enjoy pursuing when circumstances allow.
"Perhaps one day, bringing SteamWorld: Tower Defense to a new platform could become a reality," he added.
For dedicated fans and collectors, the final window to redeem existing code purchases for 3DS digital content has briefly reopened until April.
Players with unused game codes can still add these titles to their libraries—but after that point, access to new purchases will be permanently disabled as part of Nintendo's phased eShop shutdown.
SteamWorld: Tower Defense remains a notable example of early indie innovation on Nintendo hardware.
Its removal from the eShop, while perhaps inevitable, signals a wider conversation around digital preservation and ongoing access to classic video games.
Thunderful's ongoing success with the SteamWorld franchise—including hits like SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Heist, and the forthcoming SteamWorld Build—underscores both the enduring appeal and historical significance of their earliest work.
As the Nintendo 3DS eShop era concludes, players and developers alike are prompted to reflect on the importance of digital platform longevity and the rich legacy of titles like SteamWorld: Tower Defense in shaping the modern indie landscape.
