Nearly a decade after the landmark release of Stardew Valley, anticipation continues to build among the game’s global fanbase regarding the possibility of a sequel.
Stardew Valley, developed by Eric Barone, better known as ConcernedApe, made a significant impact on the gaming landscape after its original 2016 launch, offering a rich farming and life simulation experience across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch eShop.
Since its release, Stardew Valley has sold over 41 million copies worldwide, solidifying its place as one of the best-selling indie games of all time and a staple on Nintendo hardware.
In a recent appearance on the Tiger Belly Podcast, ConcernedApe addressed the much-discussed topic of a potential follow-up to Stardew Valley.
When asked about the prospects of a sequel, the developer acknowledged the community’s interest and confirmed a willingness to consider it.
Speaking candidly, ConcernedApe explained, 'From a development perspective, it’s considerably easier to expand Stardew Valley with new content rather than build an entirely new game from the ground up.
The existing systems are already established, which streamlines the update process—allowing for fun additions like unique weather events and new features.'
ConcernedApe further elaborated, noting that while a Stardew Valley 2 could happen in the future, expanding creative horizons remains a priority.
'I might eventually create Stardew Valley 2,' Barone revealed, 'but I don’t want to be recognized solely as the Stardew Valley creator.
That’s part of the motivation behind my new project, Haunted Chocolatier.'
Announced more than three years ago, Haunted Chocolatier is set to be Barone's next major release.
While specific details about its launch date and platforms remain limited, the project has attracted attention from both fans and industry observers for its promise to deliver a fresh gameplay experience distinct from Stardew Valley’s farming roots.
Throughout 2024, Stardew Valley continues to thrive on the Nintendo Switch, with its latest substantial update launching earlier this year.
These updates consistently introduce new content, quality-of-life improvements, and community-requested features—demonstrating ConcernedApe’s ongoing commitment to enriching the experience for both new and longtime players.
As ConcernedApe balances ongoing support for Stardew Valley and the ambitious development of Haunted Chocolatier, users on the Nintendo Switch and beyond can look forward to a sustained flow of engaging content.
While a sequel is not in active development, the prospect remains open, evidenced by Barone’s thoughtful approach and dedication to both creativity and the fan community.
