The title is a modernized reworking of the classic second entry in the Star Ocean series, presented in a 2.5D aesthetic that combines 2D pixel characters with 3D environments.
The new Switch 2 release is available now on the Nintendo eShop and comes with the full set of features included in the remake.
Technical improvements and performance
According to Square Enix’s release details, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Star Ocean: The Second Story R runs at 60 frames per second, an upgrade over the original Nintendo Switch release, which ran at 30 FPS.
Resolution has also been boosted: the Switch 2 build targets 1080p in both docked and handheld modes.
By comparison, the original Nintendo Switch version ran at 576p in handheld mode and 864p when docked.
Publisher notes also list increased texture resolution, more on-screen objects, and improved shadow fidelity as visual enhancements for the Switch 2 edition.
Features and content overview
Square Enix’s product description highlights the remake’s core elements: new battle mechanics, full Japanese and English voiceovers, original and rearranged music, and quality-of-life additions such as fast travel.
The game retains its dual-protagonist structure; players can begin their journey as either Claude or Rena, and that choice affects perspective, recruitable allies, and route-specific content.
The remake continues to use the series’ Private Actions system to deepen character relationships and unlock different endings.
New character illustrations for the release were produced by long-time series artist Yukihiro Kajimoto.
Combat, audio, and progression
The remake adapts and expands combat with faster, more visually dynamic encounters.
Square Enix describes a system in which repeated damage leads to a temporary stagger state that enables coordinated follow-up Assault Actions for high-damage combos.
The game includes a broad skill and crafting suite — from Cooking to Metalcraft — and an enhanced Item Creation system that supports deeper equipment customization.
All event scenes in Star Ocean: The Second Story R are fully voiced in both Japanese and English, using the original voice cast where applicable.
The soundtrack has been rearranged and recomposed by series composer Motoi Sakuraba, with full-band recordings and new orchestration for exploration and movie themes.
Difficulty and release
Star Ocean: The Second Story R ships with three difficulty presets — labeled EARTH, GALAXY, and UNIVERSE — to accommodate a range of player skill and preference.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version is available now on the Nintendo eShop, and a trailer for the new iteration has been published by Square Enix.
