Developed by an independent fan team, the project updates the original's presentation and systems while remaining an unofficial, noncommercial reinterpretation of the Wii-era Sonic adventure.
The release omits the planned party mode, which the team has said will be added in a future update.
Background and purpose
Sonic and the Secret Rings launched on Nintendo's Wii hardware in 2007 and received mixed reviews at the time, with critics noting it as an improvement over Sonic 2006 but pointing out persistent camera and control issues.
Project Reignition is a community-led effort to modernize that entry for contemporary PC hardware, addressing control schemes, visuals, performance and accessibility without abandoning the core structure of the original game.
What the release includes
The newly available build delivers a suite of improvements and platform supports that make the title more accessible to modern players and devices.
Key verified features in the public release and earlier test builds include:
- Free PC distribution via GameJolt (download available now).
- Native controller support for keyboard, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch controllers and Steam Deck.
- Multilingual support with subtitles spanning English, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish and Chinese; voice dub work-in-progress for English, Japanese and Spanish.
- Adjustable aspect ratios including 16:9, 16:10, 21:9 and 4:3.
- Six playable worlds recreated or reimagined: Sand Oasis, Dinosaur Jungle, Evil Foundry, Levitated Ruin, Pirate Storm and Skeleton Dome.
- Over 15 remixes and original music cues, and a catalogue of 50+ skills and augments.
Development milestones
Project Reignition offered a playable demo as part of Sonic Fan Fest 5 in August 2025 and released a version 0.4.2 build during SAGE 2025.
The full PC release on GameJolt followed the team’s public announcements and trailers.
The developers have explicitly framed the remake as aiming to modernize presentation and refine controls and the skill system, while retaining fidelity to the original title’s design principles.
How the remake changes the original
Among user-facing changes are remapped controls for traditional controllers, improved level select markers for story-critical missions, default equip settings that skip pre-mission ring management, removal of redundant weaker skills, and frame-rate improvements for mechanics such as Time Break.
The team also added a new time attack mode and refreshed visuals throughout the game.
Availability and legal note
Project Reignition is an unofficial fan project available for free on GameJolt for PC.
It is not an official Sega release.
Players interested in trying the remake can download the build from the project's GameJolt page today, with the developer noting party mode and further updates are planned for later releases.
