Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Director Teases 2026 Updates and Content Expansions

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, SEGA’s latest entry into the long-standing racing franchise, continues to gain momentum since its debut on Nintendo Switch in September 2025.

Directed by Ken Kobayakawa, the arcade-inspired racer celebrates SEGA’s rich history in the genre and extends the legacy established by classics like SEGA Rally.

Since launch, it has been well-received by fans and critics alike, finding a receptive audience on Nintendo’s hybrid console and driving new excitement across global gaming circles. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Ken Kobayakawa, the director behind Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, outlined the development team's ambitions for the future.

Kobayakawa stated that the positive response from players worldwide is a reflection of SEGA’s three decades of experience in racing game development.

He emphasized that their extensive know-how, dating back to SEGA Rally, helped fuel the game's success on the Nintendo Switch. Looking ahead to 2026, Kobayakawa revealed that the development team is committed to supporting Sonic Racing CrossWorlds beyond its debut year.

"We intend to keep delivering service throughout the 2026 season, and we have even more impressive surprises planned than those available at launch.

Our goal for the coming year is to amaze our players, focusing on the distinctive gaming fun that our arcade roots are known for," he explained. SEGA has also left the door open for the game to expand further should its momentum hold.

With additional character slots available, the company acknowledged it is considering supplementary content and possible expansions if Sonic Racing CrossWorlds continues to perform strongly on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms.

This approach aligns with recent trends in live-service gaming and post-launch content strategies across the industry. Since hitting the Nintendo eShop in September 2025, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds has stood out thanks to its robust character roster, dynamic tracks, and distinctive arcade flair—a hallmark of SEGA’s development philosophy.

The combination of accessible controls and deep competition has made it a favorite among fans of both classic Sega titles and newcomers to the franchise. As SEGA and its game director Ken Kobayakawa push forward, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds shows no indication of slowing down.

With continued developer support, fresh surprises on the horizon, and an energetic player base on Nintendo Switch and beyond, the franchise is poised to remain a staple among competitive racing games for years to come.
