SEGA's celebrated kart racer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, has crossed a significant sales threshold, with the publisher confirming that global sales have topped 1 million units.
The racing title, which made its debut on the Nintendo Switch at the end of September, followed up with a dedicated release for the new Nintendo Switch 2 in early December.
A physical edition for the latest hardware is scheduled to land in stores next month, offering even more accessibility for fans of the genre. Despite this notable achievement, SEGA has made it clear that the initial performance of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds did not fully meet internal expectations.
This insight comes from the company’s recent financial results presentation, where SEGA executives provided a transparent assessment of the title’s early reception and commercial impact.
Koichi Fukazawa, an executive at SEGA, acknowledged the milestone but emphasized that the publisher aims to drive further growth during the current fiscal year. "Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has received strong critical and community feedback, earning a Metascore above 80 on Metacritic and an 'Overwhelmingly Positive' user rating on Steam,” Fukazawa stated.
“While we recently announced that worldwide sales have exceeded 1 million units, initial results did not reach our expectations.
Our objective is to achieve an additional 1 million units sold within this fiscal year.
We plan to support long-term sales by continuing to deliver content updates, including planned downloadable content releases." SEGA's strategy for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds centers on sustaining player engagement and extending the title's sales longevity well beyond launch.
The publisher's commitment to ongoing support includes the rollout of new downloadable content (DLC), a move designed to attract both new players and existing fans eager for fresh experiences. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds distinguishes itself within the crowded kart racing space through its combination of responsive gameplay, vibrant visuals, and the enduring appeal of the Sonic franchise.
Its presence across the Nintendo Switch family ensures the game reaches a wide and dedicated audience, with continued eShop availability alongside forthcoming retail editions.
This multifaceted release strategy reflects SEGA's efforts to secure enduring success in a competitive market. For SEGA and fans alike, the journey of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is far from over.
With additional content and broader platform support on the horizon, both the company and its community have much to anticipate as the title races toward its next sales milestone and cements its position within the Nintendo Switch library.
