Masahiro Sakurai, the visionary creator behind the influential Super Smash Bros.
franchise, has long been a key figure in shaping the Japanese video game industry.
Recently, Sakurai received the prestigious Art Encouragement Prize from the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs, recognizing the cultural impact and creative achievements of his work.
Following this honor, Sakurai offered his perspectives on the future of Japanese game development in an in-depth interview with gaming publication Entax.
During the interview, Sakurai was asked about the increasing global presence of Chinese video game titles, such as Genshin Impact and the highly anticipated Black Myth: Wukong.
Both games have captured massive audiences around the world and have sparked discussions about the evolving landscape of the international gaming industry.
In response, Sakurai articulated a strong affirmation for the distinctiveness and creativity that has defined Japanese titles for decades.
In his remarks, Sakurai stated that Japanese developers should continue focusing on creating games that align with the tastes and sensibilities unique to Japanese culture.
He noted, "As a trend within the industry, it is important for Japanese creators to keep pursuing aspects that resonate with their own audience." Sakurai clarified that while the idea is not new, it remains a vital reminder for studios navigating a globalized market.
Sakurai also reflected on how, following the international successes of several Japanese games in the American market, there was a noticeable shift toward producing more 'Americanized' products.
According to Sakurai, this resulted in what he described as a trend toward adopting de facto standards—practices and conventions that became industry norms mostly due to competitive pressures, rather than creative vision.
"Players around the world seek the unique enjoyment offered by Japanese games," Sakurai explained.
This, he argued, is a strong indication that there is no necessity for studios to tailor their creations specifically for overseas audiences.
Instead, Sakurai believes the optimal approach is for creators to "develop games in their own style, as those who appreciate their vision will naturally gravitate toward their work."
He further emphasized the importance of creative freedom, suggesting that development teams should remain true to their instincts and values rather than conforming solely to external expectations.
However, he was quick to point out that his views represent just one perspective in an industry rich with diverse approaches and philosophies.
Sakurai’s comments come at a time when the Nintendo Switch continues to see impressive sales milestones and Japanese games maintain a significant presence on platforms such as the eShop and through Nintendo Direct showcases.
His advocacy for authenticity and cultural expression reaffirms why Japanese video game developers, including renowned studios and creators, remain influential forces in the global market.
As the Japanese game industry navigates evolving player expectations and emerging competition, Sakurai’s call for originality and self-assurance resonates strongly—not only with developers but also with a global audience that values the unique charm and creative storytelling of Japanese video games.
