Description

Sacred Line III, the highly anticipated finale to the unique visual novel trilogy for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, has officially launched digitally on itch.io.

Developed by visual artist and game designer Sasha Darko, Sacred Line III picks up directly from the narrative threads of its predecessors, concluding the mysterious and dark saga that has garnered critical attention in the retro gaming community. The Sacred Line series is notable for its "Choose-Your-Own Adventure" style gameplay, blending interactive narrative design with branching pathways that allow players to shape the outcome of the story through their decisions.

The third installment promises to deliver everything fans enjoyed in the previous entries—multiple endings, immersive storytelling, and a focus on replayability—while also introducing innovative new elements to set it apart. According to Sasha Darko, Sacred Line III is "the final chapter of the Sacred Line trilogy," bringing closure to the journey of Ellen and Sarah, two sisters trapped within a war-torn Yugoslavia haunted by cultists and supernatural threats.

The story unfolds across two distinct periods—1366 and 1999—offering players an opportunity to traverse dramatically different worlds in their quest for answers.

"Sacred Line III concludes the story of Ellen and Sarah, taking players through vivid, distinct worlds to uncover hidden secrets and resolve lingering mysteries," Darko shared in an official statement. The gameplay of Sacred Line III retains the core branching narrative structure of the series but introduces significant refinements.

The classic text-based dice fighting system has been heavily overhauled, offering a more engaging combat experience.

Additionally, the game includes a variety of challenging logic puzzles, providing new gameplay depth and encouraging strategic thinking. Notably, Sacred Line III pushes the technical boundaries of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis hardware.

It boasts advanced graphical effects, with "3D" visuals originally developed in Unity and then meticulously adapted for use on the 16-bit platform.

Complementing the game’s striking visuals is an ambitious "all-digital symphonic/metal soundtrack," which Darko describes as "the most advanced soundtrack on the platform"—a noteworthy achievement for a console originally released over three decades ago. To help both newcomers and returning fans, an in-built encyclopedia has been provided, summarizing key plot details, character biographies, and lore from previous games.

This feature allows players to fully immerse themselves in the atmospheric and unsettling world crafted throughout the trilogy. Sacred Line III is available today for $14.99 on itch.io.

Players can also download a free demo from Sasha Darko’s official website.

In addition to the standard edition, two exclusive digital options—the Unique Pack and the Founder’s Pack—are available by direct arrangement with the developer.

For collectors, a physical cartridge edition is planned for release next year, though the specific date has yet to be announced. With this final chapter, Sasha Darko cements Sacred Line as one of the most innovative and artistically ambitious projects to grace the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in recent years, further demonstrating the enduring appeal and creative possibilities of classic hardware.
