Crashmo World: The Unseen Sequel That Never Landed on Wii U or Nintendo Switch

Nintendo and its acclaimed development partner Intelligent Systems are well-known for creating innovative puzzle experiences, including the critically acclaimed eShop titles Pushmo and Crashmo for the Nintendo 3DS.

Pushmo, first released in 2011, rapidly became a fan favorite thanks to its unique blend of block-pushing puzzles and charming visual style.

Riding on the heels of this success, Intelligent Systems followed up with Crashmo in 2012, expanding the gameplay with gravity-defying mechanics.

The developer then transitioned the series to the Wii U with Pushmo World, launched globally in 2014 via the Nintendo eShop. Despite the positive reception for Pushmo World on Wii U, it was recently revealed that Intelligent Systems initially planned to further expand the franchise.

After wrapping up Pushmo World, the studio pitched a new project to Nintendo: Crashmo World, envisioned as a true successor that would bring the 3DS Crashmo innovations to the Wii U platform.

According to reliable industry sources, including a report from prominent gaming historian Liam Robertson, concepts for Crashmo World began taking shape in 2015.

The project received internal approval, and development commenced, with the working title reflecting its direct lineage from Crashmo on Nintendo 3DS. Crashmo World was scheduled for a 2017 release exclusively on Wii U, aiming to recapture puzzle fans with all-new challenges and mechanics.

However, as Nintendo shifted its strategic focus to the then-upcoming Nintendo Switch, priorities changed within the development teams.

By mid-2016, Intelligent Systems began reallocating resources away from ongoing Wii U projects to support launch software for the Nintendo Switch—the hybrid console set to redefine Nintendo’s hardware ecosystem.

Discussions reportedly took place about porting or redeveloping Crashmo World for Nintendo Switch, but the proposal was ultimately set aside.

As a result, Crashmo World was quietly cancelled before ever reaching completion or public announcement. The legacy of the Pushmo and Crashmo series remains strong among puzzle game enthusiasts, with Pushmo still available on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop storefronts (where supported).

Intelligent Systems, a veteran studio behind renowned series like Fire Emblem and Paper Mario, continues to demonstrate its development versatility and strong partnership with Nintendo.

While Crashmo World never saw release, its story adds another fascinating chapter to Nintendo's history of creative experimentation and adaptation to new hardware platforms. As Nintendo continues to innovate both in software and hardware, fans of Intelligent Systems’ puzzle work can only hope for future revivals or new installments.

For now, the story of Crashmo World stands as a reminder of the unseen evolution that shapes the company’s celebrated franchises.
