Black Tower Enigma Review: Ogre Pixel’s Game Boy–Style Puzzle Adventure on Nintendo Switch

Black Tower Enigma is a retro-inspired puzzle adventure from Mexico-based indie developer Ogre Pixel.

Released for Nintendo Switch with a distinct Game Boy Color aesthetic, the game places players in the role of Wigo, an orc who must puzzle his way through a tall tower to rescue his wife.

Ogre Pixel leaned heavily into the retro presentation: the game mimics Game Boy Color visuals, offers a square-screen mode with palette options, and the team even produced an actual physical Game Boy Color cartridge for collectors.

Design and gameplay

Black Tower Enigma adopts a top-down, screen-by-screen overworld that recalls classic 8- and 16-bit action-RPGs, but it removes combat entirely.

Instead, every tower floor is its own standalone puzzle: solve the room’s challenge and stairs to the next level appear.

The puzzles typically require moving objects or activating switches, and they’re supported by collectible books that store clues in the pause menu.

The title also includes light diversions such as fishing and small collectible hunts to extend play between puzzle floors.

Structure and content

At launch, the core tower contains ten levels; after a mid-game event players can return to find an additional ten levels and a single boss encounter.

According to the review, this second half is a new addition to the Switch and Game Boy releases and expands what is otherwise a succinct experience.

The Switch edition is available digitally via the Nintendo eShop and is priced at $7.99.

Strengths and criticisms

The game’s strong point is its faithful retro presentation and focused puzzle design.

In journalistic terms: the title is short but visually charming, with a clean puzzle loop complemented by extras like fishing and color-switching.

Criticisms cited in the review include a few English typos, a lack of an in-game progress tracker for tower floors, and a runtime that typically finishes within a couple of hours—points that contribute to a perception of polish and scope rather than core design flaws.

Verdict

Black Tower Enigma is a compact, well-crafted indie puzzle game that leans into nostalgia while delivering clever single-room puzzles.

Priced modestly and notable for its physical Game Boy Color cartridge release, it’s recommended for players who appreciate retro aesthetics and tightly designed puzzles.

The published review score for the Switch edition was 7/10.
