Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the concluding entry in Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, officially launches on April 8, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2.
The game has attracted attention not only for its place in the remake saga but also for the naming decisions made during development.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi recently discussed how the team arrived at the title Revelation and why certain options were not chosen.
Background and platform details
Developed by Square Enix, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation continues the studio's multi-part reimagining of the original Final Fantasy VII.
The project has been showcased at major events including Summer Game Fest and has been covered in outlets such as IGN.
Square Enix has confirmed the Nintendo Switch 2 as a lead platform for Revelation, and Hamaguchi has said the team is continuing development on Unreal Engine 4 rather than upgrading to Unreal Engine 5.
How Revelation became the final title
Paraphrasing Hamaguchi's comments for clarity: he confirmed that the word Resolve was not formally considered as one of the final English title contenders.
During internal Japanese development discussions the team did use the concept expressed in Japanese as ketsui, which translates roughly to resolve, but ketsui does not carry the same English phonetic lead-in as words that begin with RE.
When the team evaluated English equivalents in preparation for public reveals, they found the sound and connotation of Revelation to be a stronger fit.
Hamaguchi also explained that Revelation had been selected before extensive discussion of the resolve concept.
He said the development leadership, including a conversation with series creative director Tetsuya Nomura, narrowed the title list to three final contenders.
Hamaguchi declined to reveal the other two options now, citing concern that early disclosure could spark unnecessary online debate about which title might have been better.
He added that consultations with the North American Square Enix team resulted in a unanimous decision that Revelation was the best choice for the project.
What this means for fans and coverage
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's April 8, 2027 release on Nintendo Switch 2 is now scheduled, and the team remains on Unreal Engine 4 for development.
Hamaguchi's comments clarify the cultural and linguistic factors that influenced the game's English title and confirm internal alignment at Square Enix on the choice.
Further details about alternative title contenders may be shared after launch if the studio decides to revisit the conversation.
