Resident Evil Requiem Unveils New Zombie AI and Story Details at Online Showcase

Capcom’s latest entry in its storied survival horror franchise received a major update during the recent Resident Evil Requiem Showcase.

The highly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem is set for release on February 27, 2026, and will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam, continuing the series’ proud tradition of cross-platform support.

As Capcom celebrates Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary, the Showcase provided deeper insight into new gameplay features and narrative elements designed to set Requiem apart from previous titles. A standout reveal from director Koshi Nakanishi centered on a radical evolution in zombie design.

According to Nakanishi, Resident Evil Requiem introduces foes that maintain distinct aspects of their human lives even after infection.

In gameplay footage, viewers observed a towering zombie in a kitchen, swinging a cleaver.

The design team emphasized how this undead figure’s actions reflect a former life as a butcher, with vocalizations such as a guttural “next” suggesting a primitive retention of speech.

Nakanishi explained that, for example, some enemies will continue familiar routines—such as a custodian zombie relentlessly tending to cleaning duties even in death.

This innovation will expand gameplay strategies, encouraging players to read enemy patterns based on lingering habits from previous lives, resulting in more dynamic encounters and new tactical possibilities. The Showcase further touched upon the game’s narrative, unveiling critical plot points without spoiling key mysteries.

Nakanishi disclosed that the origin of the Elpis virus, which transforms people into flesh-hungry monsters, will play a central role.

He alluded to a critical secret held by protagonist Leon Kennedy, which ties directly to the tragic fate of Grace Ashcroft’s mother, Alyssa.

This overarching subplot promises to drive both returning fans and series newcomers to unravel the mysteries underpinning Requiem’s storyline. In addition to gameplay innovations and story teasers, Capcom also announced a range of celebratory products and events.

These include collectible figures of lead characters Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft slated for Fall 2026, and a unique collaboration with Hamilton Watch Company to launch limited-edition timepieces focusing on both protagonists, each restricted to 2,000 pieces.

Further commemorating the milestone year, Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary ‘Symphony of Legacy’ orchestral concert will tour across the United States, Europe, and Japan in 2026. With these revelations, Resident Evil Requiem positions itself as a flagship title not only for the Nintendo Switch 2 but also for Capcom’s continued dominance in the survival horror genre.

For dedicated franchise followers and new generation players alike, Requiem’s blend of innovative enemy AI, deep narrative hooks, and anniversary celebrations make it one of the most closely watched releases on the upcoming release calendar.
