Red Dead Redemption 2 Reportedly Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 with Next-Gen Enhancements
Rockstar Games is poised to bring one of its most celebrated titles, Red Dead Redemption 2, to the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, according to recent reports from Gamereactor.
Sources familiar with the matter have indicated that the open-world epic will not only make its debut on Nintendo’s next-generation portable home console, but will also receive graphical and performance upgrades for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S through a dedicated next-gen patch.
Red Dead Redemption 2 originally launched in October 2018, quickly earning critical acclaim and securing over 175 Game of the Year Awards.
Developed by Rockstar Games, the title immerses players in 1899 America, following the story of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they evade federal agents and relentless bounty hunters.
Since its release, RDR2 has become a landmark in open-world gaming, praised for its storytelling, world-building, and technical achievement, and has surpassed 61 million copies sold worldwide as of May 2024 according to Take-Two Interactive earnings reports.
The latest update comes amid broader industry moves, with Rockstar Games also preparing a next-generation upgrade patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
This patch is expected to enhance both graphics fidelity and overall performance, reinforcing Rockstar’s commitment to keeping its flagship titles relevant across evolving console hardware.
Gamereactor notes that multiple independent sources have corroborated the existence of the Nintendo Switch 2 port, suggesting a potential release as soon as later this year.
This aligns with a notable shift in Rockstar’s release timeline, marked by the recent announcement that the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed to May 26, 2026.
Such adjustments may have opened the door for Rockstar to focus on bringing Red Dead Redemption 2 to new platforms.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has signaled strong backing for the Nintendo Switch 2 ecosystem.
This week, CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed the company’s support, stating that he believes in the promise and longevity of the new console.
Zelnick confirmed that Take-Two’s publishing division, 2K, intends to offer robust early support for the Nintendo Switch 2, with planned editions of Civilization VII, Borderlands 4, NBA 2K, and WWE 2K already in the pipeline.
Such commitments underscore growing confidence in Nintendo’s hardware direction from leading third-party publishers.
If realized, the Red Dead Redemption 2 port would be a milestone for both Rockstar Games and Nintendo, marking a major addition to the Nintendo eShop lineup and further blurring the lines between portable and home console gaming performance.
Both the next-gen patch and potential Nintendo Switch 2 port signal Rockstar’s broader strategy of preserving its flagship IPs across every major modern platform, ensuring new audiences continue to experience one of the last decade’s defining gaming achievements.
