Rayman Legends Untold Aims for 60 FPS and Ray Tracing on Nintendo Switch 2

Rayman Legends Untold revealed during Sony's State of Play has put technical ambitions front and center for Ubisoft Montpellier.

The platformer, developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, is scheduled to launch on October 1 and will arrive on multiple platforms including Nintendo hardware.

During post-reveal interviews, Ubisoft Montpellier technical advisor Fabien Delpiano outlined the studio's performance targets for the Nintendo Switch 2 and other systems, confirming that visual features such as ray tracing and DLSS will play a role in the final build.

Studio collaboration and engine work

Delpiano said the Montpellier team reached out to a German Ubisoft team already advanced on a Switch 2 port—specifically the Star Wars Outlaws project—because both teams are using the same engine and could share learnings.

He explained that Montpellier's high-detail assets and character work required coordination with the other porting team, and that the two groups have been collaborating for roughly a year to align technical approaches.

Performance targets and frame rate goals

According to Delpiano, the studio's primary objective is to achieve a steady 60 frames per second across platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2.

He noted that the team is targeting the same frame rate and parity in resolution regardless of player count, and that reaching 60 FPS across a wide range of hardware was a central challenge during development.

Ray tracing, DLSS, and resolution scaling

Delpiano acknowledged that ray tracing is computationally expensive and pointed out that other Switch 2 projects run at 30 FPS to accommodate that cost.

Montpellier, however, is aiming for 60 FPS from Switch 2 up to high-end platforms such as PS5 Pro and high-end PCs.

To meet those targets, the team pushed the Snowdrop engine from a 30 FPS baseline toward 60 FPS and used resolution scaling as a key optimization—reducing internal resolution to lower GPU load while leveraging DLSS to restore visual fidelity.

He also mentioned that in docked mode, where power consumption constraints are relaxed, the build can target 4K output.

What this means for players

With Rayman Legends Untold set to release on October 1, players on Switch 2 may expect a version of the game that emphasizes consistent frame rate and enhanced lighting effects made possible by ray tracing and DLSS.

Ubisoft Montpellier's public comments frame the launch as the result of cross-studio collaboration and deliberate engine optimization to balance visual quality and performance.
