Super Mario Odyssey Mod 'A Galaxy Story' Reimagines Wii Classic on Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch remains a thriving platform for both official releases and creative fan projects, with Super Mario Odyssey consistently ranking among its most beloved titles since its 2017 launch.
The game, praised for reinventing the Mario formula with open-world elements and inventive mechanics, has inspired an active modding community determined to expand its possibilities.
One of the community’s most ambitious efforts, Super Mario Odyssey - A Galaxy Story, is poised to bring the magic of Super Mario Galaxy’s Wii adventure to modern audiences.
Developed by talented modder Slycer and a group of collaborators, Super Mario Odyssey - A Galaxy Story is being heralded as the largest Super Mario Odyssey mod to date.
The project merges the innovative gameplay of Super Mario Odyssey with the beloved cosmic environments and gameplay elements from Super Mario Galaxy, originally released on the Wii in 2007.
The scope of the mod is impressive.
According to its creators, A Galaxy Story faithfully recreates all 42 galaxies from Super Mario Galaxy within the Super Mario Odyssey engine, allowing players to revisit classic levels reimagined for Nintendo Switch hardware.
The mod also adds over 400 new collectible moons, styled as power stars, that challenge both newcomers and series veterans.
In addition to the levels, core Galaxy gameplay features make a full return.
The Comet Observatory, which served as Super Mario Galaxy’s central hub, is reintroduced as a revamped overworld system.
Players can also expect iconic Galaxy mechanics, such as gravity-defying platforming, assembly blocks, Cataquacks, Flipswitch panels, and Tox Boxes.
The mod even incorporates classic bosses and enemies, ensuring a comprehensive homage to the original Wii release.
“We’ve implemented numerous mechanics from Super Mario Galaxy—including gravity mechanics and bespoke obstacles—while staying true to Odyssey’s core gameplay,” explained the development team in their project description, underscoring the technical and creative achievement of blending two major Mario titles.
Super Mario Galaxy’s enduring popularity is evident; Nintendo did offer an official way to play the game on the Switch as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection in 2020, though availability was limited and the collection has since been delisted from the Nintendo eShop.
A Galaxy Story revives the Wii-era classic on modern hardware through the lens of Odyssey’s advanced game engine and vibrant visuals.
Super Mario Odyssey - A Galaxy Story is scheduled for release in 2025 and will be available as a fan-made mod, reliant on Super Mario Odyssey’s base game.
This project stands as a testament to the enduring passion and technical skill within the Nintendo modding community.
For longtime fans and newcomers alike, A Galaxy Story offers a unique opportunity to experience the wonder of Super Mario Galaxy in a fresh, reimagined format on Nintendo Switch.
Stay tuned for updates as the 2025 release approaches and the Super Mario Odyssey modding scene continues to evolve.
