Capcom has confirmed that Proto Man will be a playable character in Mega Man: Dual Override, the studio’s upcoming Mega Man entry slated for digital release on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027.

The announcement, published on the PlayStation Blog, outlines how Proto Man differs from Mega Man in combat, progression, and mechanical design.

Capcom described Proto Man as Dr. Light’s first creation and the prototype who “started it all,” noting that the red-clad robot originally debuted as an adversary in Mega Man 3 and later evolved into a recurring ally who assists Mega Man in dire moments.

The developer emphasized that Dual Override will treat Proto Man and Mega Man as distinct playable options, each with unique strengths, combat philosophies, and separate progression systems.

According to Capcom’s post, Proto Man is built for close-quarters combat.

Where Mega Man favors longer-range tactics, Proto Man’s playstyle rewards aggressive, technical rushes into the fray.

His signature Proto Buster trades range for raw stopping power, delivering high damage at point-blank distances.

The announcement also confirms the return of the Proto Shield, which in Dual Override functions on both offense and defense as part of Proto Man’s special abilities.

Rather than copying defeated Robot Masters’ powers like Mega Man, Proto Man unlocks new attacks—many centered on his shield—by defeating bosses.

Capcom explains that Proto Man will accumulate a versatile set of Shield Actions that can be triggered on command to increase offensive options and mobility.

Capcom cautioned that these powerful Shield Actions carry a mechanical drawback: repeated use strains Proto Man’s systems and causes him to overheat.

Players will need to monitor his temperature to avoid performance penalties and forced cooldowns during combat.

Capcom also confirmed that Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo figures will launch to coincide with Mega Man: Dual Override’s release.

The game will be distributed digitally on the Nintendo eShop for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027, as stated in the company’s announcement on the PlayStation Blog.
