Pokémon Unite Overhauls License System: Introducing License Journeys and Aeos Coin Discontinuation

The Pokémon Company has unveiled a significant update to its popular MOBA, Pokémon Unite, bringing substantial changes to how players unlock new Pokémon characters in the game.

Originally released in July 2021 for Nintendo Switch and subsequently expanded to mobile devices, Pokémon Unite has maintained a dedicated user base thanks to regular updates and gameplay innovations.

This latest announcement will impact the game’s in-game economy and progression system in a meaningful way. The highlight of the update is the introduction of 'License Journeys,' a new method for players to earn Unite Licenses—required to access and play as various Pokémon in Pokémon Unite.

With the new License Journeys feature, players will be able to amass License Points through regular gameplay, which can then be redeemed to unlock Pokémon Licenses.

Importantly, users gain the flexibility to select which Licenses to unlock, either from an initial pool of five specific Pokémon or from the entire roster, depending on their gameplay experience and preferences. A spokesperson for The Pokémon Company summarized the motivation behind this shift, stating that the License Journeys system is designed to "give players greater agency in choosing which Pokémon they wish to unlock and to further reward regular play." Accompanying this update is the planned discontinuation of Aeos Coins, which have served as a foundational in-game currency since Pokémon Unite’s launch.

As of December 4th, 2025, players will no longer be able to earn new Aeos Coins or use existing coins to purchase Unite Licenses.

Players holding unspent Aeos Coins at the cutoff date will be able to trade them for License Points or various other in-game items through a dedicated Aeos Coin Exchange shop.

It’s worth noting that both Aeos Coins and the exchange shop itself will be fully retired by May 2026, at which point all support for this currency will end. Pokémon Unite has seen widespread engagement since its debut, with millions of downloads on both Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms.

This update marks a pivotal shift in the game’s structure, aiming to streamline progression and keep the experience fresh for veterans and newcomers alike.
