Pokémon Pokopia Preview: Game Length, Features, and Insights from Director Takuto Edagawa

Pokémon Pokopia Preview: Game Length, Features, and Insights from Director Takuto Edagawa As anticipation continues to build for Pokémon Pokopia, the innovative building life-sim headed to Nintendo Switch 2, new previews—including our hands-on impressions—signal strong positive buzz ahead of its March 5 release.

Developed by Koei Tecmo in partnership with The Pokémon Company, Pokémon Pokopia marks a fresh direction for the franchise, inviting players to revitalize an abandoned island alongside their favorite Pokémon companions. At the helm of the project is director Takuto Edagawa, who brings a wealth of experience from his work on acclaimed titles such as Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Wild Hearts.

In a recent interview with IGN, Edagawa provided key insights into Pokémon Pokopia’s philosophy and expected game length.

He explained that the primary objective of the game "is typically not to simply reach the end credits." Instead, the design focuses on allowing players to create and explore their own world alongside Pokémon. According to Edagawa, players can expect the core experience to last between 20 to 40 hours depending on individual playstyle.

He commented that while the main story offers substantial content, "the average playthrough will range from 20 to 40 hours, but this really varies with how each player approaches the game." This positions Pokémon Pokopia as a robust adventure even for those focusing solely on the main objectives.

For comparison, the Dragon Quest Builders titles, on which Edagawa previously worked, often stretch into 40–50+ hours for a full playthrough. However, the journey in Pokopia does not conclude with the credits.

Edagawa further confirmed, "There’s much more for players to experience after reaching the end roll.

I believe players will be encouraged and motivated to continue engaging with the game long after the main story wraps up." This aligns with the open-ended nature frequently associated with life-sim and building games, promising replayability and ongoing content. Fans of games like Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest Builders have expressed growing excitement for Pokémon Pokopia.

Early impressions from our own previews highlight that Pokopia could easily fill the void for those seeking another cozy island life experience on Nintendo Switch 2, especially amidst uncertainty over the next Animal Crossing installment. With a scheduled release date of March 5, 2025, and strong early feedback, Pokémon Pokopia is poised to be a major addition to the Nintendo Switch 2 lineup.

As more details emerge and the eShop listing goes live, players eager for a new creative journey with Pokémon will want to mark their calendars for Nintendo’s next big offering.
