Niantic, the developer behind the massively popular mobile title Pokémon GO, has officially revealed the next themed in-game event—the Pokémon GO Equinox event.
This seasonal celebration leverages the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere, providing fresh gameplay elements and exclusive content for fans worldwide on both iOS and Android platforms. The Pokémon GO Equinox event kicks off at 1pm PDT on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, and runs through 1pm PDT on Tuesday, March 26, 2019.
During this week-long event, players will encounter an increased number of Grass-type Pokémon in the wild.
Fan-favorite species such as Oddish, Exeggcute, Sunkern, and Shroomish will appear more frequently, creating an excellent opportunity for Trainers to expand their Pokédex and gather valuable resources. A key highlight of the Equinox event is the hemisphere swap of the Pokémon Lunatone and Solrock.
While the event is active, these region-exclusive Pokémon will exchange their hemispherical locations, giving players a chance to catch species that are usually unavailable in their area.
Niantic confirmed in a statement that this move aims to "provide excitement for Trainers across the globe by making rare Pokémon accessible for a limited period." In addition, Trainers can look forward to challenging an array of Grass-type Pokémon in special Raid Battles throughout the event.
These unique encounters promise not only exciting gameplay but also potential rewards for cooperative play.
Niantic also announced the introduction of Grass-type Pokémon Field Research tasks—special research assignments available for a limited time—which will further enhance the event's immersive nature. Adding to the game's evolving move pool, two new moves will be permanently available for select Pokémon after the Equinox event begins.
The move Acid Spray can now be learned by Pokémon including Arbok, Victreebel, Tentacruel, Muk, Alolan Muk, Quagsire, Qwilfish, Octillery, and Swalot.
Meanwhile, Leaf Tornado becomes an option for Victreebel, Shiftry, and Tropius.
This update continues Niantic's commitment to keeping gameplay fresh and balanced through innovative move sets and expanded battle strategies. Pokémon GO has continued to maintain its relevance in the rapidly evolving mobile gaming space since its initial launch in July 2016, frequently topping app store charts and driving engagement through regular updates and in-game events.
With millions of daily active players, Niantic's ongoing support—including events like the Equinox—reflects the developer's dedication to fostering a vibrant, global community of Trainers. The Pokémon GO Equinox event demonstrates Niantic’s agile approach to content delivery, thoughtfully aligning in-game experiences with real-world seasonal changes.
Whether you're a longtime enthusiast or just starting your journey, the week of March 19–26 presents an excellent opportunity to dive back into the adventure, complete new research, add rare Pokémon to your collection, and experience the dynamic nature of Pokémon GO on iOS and Android.
