Studio Waterzooi, well-known for its innovative approach to narrative-driven games, has officially announced its newest title, Please, Watch the Artwork, set to launch on the Nintendo Switch.
Building on the success of its previous releases, Please, Touch the Artwork 1 and 2, Waterzooi’s latest project invites players into an immersive spot-the-difference experience, blending casual gameplay with evocative artistic themes.
In Please, Watch the Artwork, gamers take on the role of a night shift monitor at the MaMA—the Museum of Animated Modern Art.
Here, players are tasked with meticulously observing animated versions of masterpieces inspired by renowned American realist painter Edward Hopper.
The objective is clear: identify irregularities and report any anomalies that appear within the gallery’s art displays throughout your overnight shift.
Unlike conventional horror titles, the atmosphere is subtly unsettling.
There are no jumpscares or monsters.
Instead, the game evokes feelings of isolation, nostalgia, and the uncanny, enhanced by the enigmatic presence of a sorrowful clown character impacting the museum’s artworks as the night unfolds.
Waterzooi’s signature design philosophy is evident, leveraging point-and-click controls and a zoom function to allow players of all skill levels to explore fine details.
The game offers six themed galleries, each highlighting a curated selection of 40 animated paintings.
In total, players will encounter more than 400 unique artistic anomalies across these galleries, meticulously hand-painted and brought to life through bespoke animations and special effects.
Reflecting on the mood and style, a representative from Waterzooi explained that Please, Watch the Artwork is intended as a “casual yet hauntingly atmospheric” experience, echoing the themes of urban solitude found in Hopper’s work.
Immersion is further deepened by the absence of a musical soundtrack, replaced by ambient noises that replicate the ambiance of late-night museum settings.
The player’s only company is the silence, the distant sounds captured in the scenes, and the mysterious clown whose melancholia slowly spreads throughout the gallery.
Accessibility remains central to Waterzooi’s approach—three distinct difficulty settings allow both seasoned gamers and newcomers to tailor the challenge to their preferences, ensuring a frustration-free experience.
This broad appeal is complemented by the game’s inviting visual style and intuitive controls, making it an ideal choice for casual Nintendo Switch players seeking something distinct on the Nintendo eShop.
While a specific release date for Please, Watch the Artwork has yet to be confirmed, Studio Waterzooi’s track record and unique vision have already begun to attract attention from both critics and fans of narrative-driven indie titles.
