Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Ultimate Edition’s anticipated release on Nintendo Switch has been officially delayed until 2020, publisher Versus Evil and developer Obsidian Entertainment have announced.
The acclaimed role-playing game is thus set to join the Nintendo Switch library later than initially expected, as the teams focus on ensuring a seamless gameplay experience for fans of the franchise. Originally released for PC in May 2018 and powered by the Unity engine, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire previously arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, earning widespread praise for its deep narrative and tactical combat.
The Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch will include all previously released downloadable content (DLC), such as Beast of Winter, The Forgotten Sanctum, and Seeker, Slayer, Survivor, providing players with more than 100 hours of gameplay per playthrough. Speaking to Gamereactor, Versus Evil’s head of production, Lance James, emphasized the team’s commitment to maintaining the quality and immersive world-building that players expect from the series.
James explained that the development team has worked extensively to provide a Switch port that aligns with the experience found on other platforms.
While the Nintendo Switch version required some performance optimizations, James assured fans that these adjustments will not compromise the look or feel of the game.
"We’ve made every effort to ensure that the world of Eternity remains intact on Nintendo Switch, with only minor performance tweaks that won't impact the overall experience," James indicated. James highlighted the challenges inherent in porting such a complex title, given the dynamic environmental details ranging from interactive foliage to spell and combat effects.
According to him, careful playtesting and ongoing collaboration with Obsidian Entertainment have allowed both teams to respond to feedback and address every aspect of the port.
The attention to detail extends to the smallest elements, ensuring players encounter a living, vibrant world regardless of hardware. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire’s story revolves around Eothas, a deity who reawakens in the form of a colossal statue, dramatically impacting the world.
Players assume the role of the Watcher of Caed Nua, embarking on a branching quest to uncover Eothas’s motives and determine their own allegiances.
The Ultimate Edition promises a comprehensive content package, launching both physically at retail and digitally through the Nintendo eShop in 2020. As fans await the game’s arrival on Nintendo Switch, Versus Evil and Obsidian Entertainment have reiterated their dedication to delivering the complete Pillars of Eternity II experience on Nintendo’s hybrid console.
