Revolution Software, the acclaimed British studio best known for its million-selling Broken Sword series, is doubling down on the importance of physical game releases—despite a rapidly digitalizing market.
In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, company founder Charles Cecil addressed the ongoing demand for boxed editions, even as digital game sales have become the predominant mode on platforms like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.
"There’s a widespread belief that physical game sales are a thing of the past—but for a segment of passionate gamers, the demand remains strong," Cecil remarked.
He reflected on the loyalty of the Broken Sword community.
"Our fans consistently ask for physical versions of our titles.
For them, owning a boxed game isn’t just about playing—it’s about collecting and showcasing their commitment."
Cecil drew parallels to the music industry, recalling a time when record collections were a reflection of personal identity.
"In my youth, seeing someone’s record collection told you a lot about them.
There’s something tactile and meaningful about holding a physical item—be it a vinyl record, a game box, or character figurines.
These collections are a way for people to express which ‘tribe’ or fandom they belong to."
The significance of physical editions persists, particularly in the context of Revolution Software’s output.
The studio’s flagship franchise, Broken Sword, has sold millions globally and amassed a dedicated following since the first adventure’s release in 1996.
As part of ongoing efforts to engage this audience, Revolution recently remastered the original Broken Sword and is preparing a crowdfunding campaign to update the series' second entry, Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror.
"Despite forecasts dating back 15 years that predicted the demise of physical media, our experience shows that when fans care about something, they value tangible versions," Cecil explained.
He noted that the ritual of scanning shelves—whether for music, movies, or games—remains a meaningful way for enthusiasts to connect and celebrate shared interests.
Revolution Software’s commitment to physical releases stands out in today’s game industry landscape, where eShop downloads and digital libraries have become the norm.
Yet, through actions and words, the studio affirms that the appeal of holding a box, displaying a collection, and offering loyal fans a piece of gaming history remains as strong as ever.
