Description

ByteRockers Games and btf have officially announced that their hand-drawn 2D metroidvania, Constance, is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch.

Scheduled for a digital release on the Nintendo eShop in 2026, Constance promises to bring a deeply artistic and narrative-driven experience to Nintendo’s popular hardware platform. Constance stands out through its exploration of mental health, creativity, and themes of passion and work culture, all woven into the journey of the eponymous main character.

Players will step into the shoes of Constance, a protagonist trapped within her own subconscious, facing internal struggles represented by tangible in-game challenges.

The title uses its gameplay and story to reflect Constance’s fight against her inner demons, as she seeks awareness, acceptance, and the resilience needed to overcome personal obstacles. The development team at ByteRockers Games and btf have crafted Constance with a distinct visual identity, leveraging detailed hand-drawn environments and painstaking frame-by-frame character animation.

This commitment to artistic design aims to create a living, immersive world that mirrors Constance’s inner psyche, providing an engaging metroidvania experience that is visually as well as emotionally rich. Key features of Constance include innovative paint-based mechanics, allowing players to merge with the environment, traverse walls, and even soar through the air or slice through enemies.

The protagonist wields a brush that grows in power as players unlock new techniques, enabling them to defeat formidable foes, tackle platforming challenges, solve intricate puzzles, and uncover hidden secrets within the game’s non-linear world.

The brush introduces gameplay depth with a unique corruption system, requiring players to balance power use to avoid negative effects. Constance’s world spans over six distinct biomes, each packed with secrets, branching paths, side quests, and collectible items.

Players will be able to customize Constance’s abilities by collecting inspirations, sketching in an in-game journal, and upgrading those sketches to enhance gameplay.

The inner world’s design is deeply interwoven with the themes of mental health and self-discovery, with each environment, character, and enemy symbolizing pieces of Constance’s personal journey and psychological landscape. The game further enriches its narrative through interactive flashbacks, enabling players to explore the protagonist’s history of personal struggles, creativity, and search for purpose.

Constance will offer multiple ways to approach death and retry challenges, giving players the choice to persevere or retreat to explore new paths, adding both accessibility and replayability to the experience. Constance is slated for a global digital launch on the Nintendo Switch eShop in 2026.

Both ByteRockers Games and btf are known for their dedication to unique visual styles and thoughtful storytelling, and Constance is set to continue that tradition, delivering an indie adventure that skillfully marries engaging gameplay with meaningful narrative themes.
