Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword — the developer’s high-profile return to the Onimusha franchise — sold more than 1 million units on its first day of release.

The milestone, announced by Capcom, also pushed cumulative sales across the Onimusha series past the 10 million mark, a notable achievement for a franchise that spans roughly 25 years.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a swordplay action game starring Miyamoto Musashi and set in Edo-era Kyoto.

Capcom described the title as a modern reinvention of the series’ signature sword-based combat, combining the franchise’s familiar action with updated technology, a focused narrative and enhanced visual presentation.

The game is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, where it has drawn immediate commercial attention from Switch owners and digital storefront shoppers.

In its public statement, Capcom said the title’s launch-day performance was driven in part by pre-release marketing efforts.

The company noted that multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions broadened awareness among a wide range of players, helping the new entry achieve seven-figure sales on day one.

Capcom also highlighted that, thanks to the strong debut, the single title represents roughly 10 percent of the franchise’s total lifetime sales.

Capcom further framed Onimusha: Way of the Sword within a larger strategy to revitalize dormant properties.

The publisher said that, alongside its regular cadence of major annual releases, it is focusing on “re-activating IPs” that have not seen recent new entries.

That approach aims to leverage Capcom’s catalog to maximize corporate value and bring older franchises back into active development and marketing cycles.

The company has previously signaled interest in expanding the franchise with additional projects, including a 2024 virtual reality spin-off.

For developers, publishers and industry observers, Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s rapid commercial success underscores the demand for legacy franchises reimagined for modern platforms.

For players, the title’s availability on Nintendo Switch 2 marks a major moment for the Onimusha series’ return.

Capcom’s full announcement lays out the sales figures and the broader IP strategy that will influence how the company approaches other dormant series in the years ahead.
