The title marks the franchise's return with its first new entry in 14 years and arrives alongside new downloadable content that ties into the mobile spinoff Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE.
Release and upgrade path
Once Upon A Katamari will be available on Nintendo Switch 2 as a digital release via the Nintendo eShop.
Bandai Namco has confirmed that existing Nintendo Switch owners will receive a free update for the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
The upgrade adds exclusive mouse controls, improved frame-rate performance, and enhanced graphics.
Players can transfer Nintendo Switch save data to Nintendo Switch 2 provided there is no preexisting save data already on the Switch 2 system.
Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC
The launch will coincide with Rolling LIVE Highlights, a downloadable content pack that brings 10 quests and their iconic soundtracks from the mobile game Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE.
The DLC expands the title’s live-streaming theme: players roll alongside Earth’s streamers, recruit new cousins, and grow their katamari to keep the King of All Cosmos popular and ahead of trends.
Gameplay, modes, and features
Bandai Namco says the new entry preserves the series’ memorable, playful tone and colorful, whimsical world while delivering the franchise’s signature gameplay in fresh ways across all-new stages.
Key gameplay additions include a magnet tool that pulls shiny items toward the katamari and the ability to play as the Prince or any of 68 customizable cousins and kin, each with selectable colors and facial features.
Multiplayer: KatamariBall
A new four-player competitive mode, KatamariBall, challenges players to roll the largest katamari possible within a time limit and trade creations for points.
KatamariBall supports online multiplayer as well as offline play against CPU opponents.
Context and developer credentials
Once Upon A Katamari continues Bandai Namco’s long-running franchise centered on the King of All Cosmos and the Prince.
The publisher is positioning this release as a modern return to the series’ distinctive style for Nintendo’s next-generation handheld-home console, with the Nintendo Switch 2 launch and eShop distribution confirmed for 8 October 2026.
