Octopath Traveler 0: Square Enix Unveils Story, Characters, and Town-Building for Nintendo Switch Launch

Square Enix, in collaboration with Dokidoki Grooveworks, has officially revealed key details for the upcoming role-playing game Octopath Traveler 0.

The new entry, slated for release on December 4, 2025, will arrive on both the Nintendo Switch and the anticipated Switch 2, further expanding the acclaimed Octopath Traveler series.

Building on the rich legacy of the original Octopath Traveler and its mobile spin-off Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, this latest installment promises a compelling blend of narrative depth, strategic gameplay, and innovative mechanics. Set once again on the continent of Orsterra, Octopath Traveler 0 centers on a gripping tale of revenge and redemption.

Players take on the role of a protagonist whose hometown has been devastated by three powerful forces vying for control over Orsterra.

Driven by a desire for justice, the protagonist embarks on a journey to confront these influential adversaries—a narrative direction Square Enix describes as a "story of revenge and restoration surrounding the divine rings." The antagonists are drawn from some of the most formidable figures previously seen in Champions of the Continent.

Among them is Herminia, known as the Covetous Witch, whose insatiable greed has cast the town of Valore into shadow.

Tytos, titled the Hero, leads a group of ex-criminals and exerts iron-fisted rule over Emberglow, infamously razing the protagonist’s village.

Another rival, Auguste the Playwright, leverages chaos in the arts city of Theatropolis for his own creative pursuits, each villain representing the core themes of wealth, power, and fame respectively. As the story unfolds, players have the chance to recruit a diverse selection of companions.

Detailed by Square Enix, notable allies include Celsus, an expert thief and bodyguard in Valore, Macy, a dedicated wandering apothecary in Emberglow, Alexia, a scholar seeking breakthroughs in ancient magic, Viator, a refined warrior on a familial quest, and Ludo, a youthful but shrewd merchant from Sunshade.

Each character brings distinct jobs and ultimate techniques to battles, such as "Master of Evasion" for the thief, "Prism Mist" for the apothecary, and "Ancient Magic" for the scholar, introducing new strategic possibilities for party composition. One of the standout additions in Octopath Traveler 0 is the town-building mechanic.

Players can rebuild their hometown by constructing and upgrading various facilities, like Hubs for cooking, Fields and Ranches for gathering, and Shops that expand as the story progresses.

Every resident possesses unique skills that can aid the town’s recovery, challenging players to assign roles strategically for optimal growth.

This feature adds a layer of management and customization rarely seen in previous entries. Another substantial gameplay refinement is the new Action Skill system.

Players can acquire "Mastery" items to unlock and interchange abilities, providing substantial flexibility in party development.

By establishing a Training Ground, companions can master and share skills, enabling robust character customization.
