Obakeidoro 2: Chase & Seek will receive a western release on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch on August 6, 2026, the publisher confirmed. The title is a direct sequel to the 2019 Obakeidoro and first launched in Japan in October of the previous year as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. The upcoming Western launch expands platform availability by bringing the game to both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop.
Designed around asymmetric multiplayer, Obakeidoro 2 places players in short, tense matches that pit a small number of Monsters against larger Human teams. Matches support up to eight players online and run on a quick three-minute timer: Monsters field one or two players while Human teams can be three or six players. If the Monsters capture and jail all Humans within the time limit, the Monster team wins; otherwise the Humans prevail by surviving until time expires.
Commenting on the game's tone, the team described the project as blending traditional Japanese folklore with a "scary-cute" visual style that aims to balance jump-scare tension and broad accessibility. Monster abilities vary — examples include wall traversal, burst movement, and powerful capture attacks — while Human mechanics emphasize cooperation: jumping between floors, carrying allies, and using the Lantern as a stun tool to break away from pursuers.
The publisher notes players should rely on teamwork for rescues: captured teammates can be freed from jail, but rescue attempts can be risky if Monsters are camping or setting traps, occasionally turning rescues into decisive ambushes.
Obakeidoro 2 includes both online and local options, and supports a range of modes: Quick Match (with rotating maps), private Room Match with password protection, Join Friends functionality, a single-player Chase & Seek mode for earning in-game Coins, Local Party for up to eight players via local wireless, and a Splitscreen mode for up to four players on one system. The game also offers a Custom Rules mode to adjust monster-to-human ratios and time limits.
Notably, Obakeidoro 2 supports Game Share across two Nintendo Switch 2 systems, allowing players who do not own the title to join a shared session. The western release will be sold digitally on the Nintendo eShop starting August 6, 2026, aligning with ongoing coverage of Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch software updates.
