Final Fantasy IX Animated Series 'Black Mages Legacy' Enters Production at Eurovisual

Production is officially underway for 'Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy,' an eagerly awaited animated adaptation set in the rich universe of Final Fantasy IX.

The project is spearheaded by Eurovisual, a prominent French animation studio known for its innovative storytelling and high-quality productions.

The announcement comes directly from Eurovisual's official website and has quickly gained traction within gaming and animation circles. 'Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy' marks the latest effort to bring Square Enix's iconic franchise to a new generation through episodic 2D animation.

The inaugural season will span 10 episodes, each with a runtime of 22 minutes.

Although no precise launch window has been announced, the animated series is reportedly targeting a 2028 release.

This information aligns with a December 2023 report by Écran Total—a reputable French publication covering entertainment industry developments. For years, fans have speculated about a potential Final Fantasy IX adaptation.

The initial version of the project began at Cyber Group Studios, another notable French animation studio.

In June 2021, a press release detailed Cyber Group Studios’ exclusive option agreement with Square Enix Co., Ltd.

aimed at crafting and pitching a Final Fantasy IX series to global distributors.

However, the project faced significant challenges in 2024 when Cyber Group Studios entered a judicial insolvency recovery process.

As a result, the company attracted interest from four different bidders seeking to acquire its assets, leaving the series' future uncertain. The uncertainty came to a head in early 2025: leaked pitch materials surfaced online, providing insight into the show's intended direction and its focus on the children of the beloved black mage character, Vivi.

Later that spring, the Paris Commercial Court ordered the liquidation of Cyber Group Studios, effectively halting progress on the series.

In what proved to be a turning point, Eurovisual stepped in, acquiring the project along with 80% of Cyber Group Studios' assets and ensuring that development could continue. The current synopsis for 'Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy' centers on the children of Vivi—named Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc—who represent the last remaining dark mages across four continents.

Living peacefully in the city of Alexandria, their quiet lives are disrupted when Koln discovers Mel, mysteriously frozen like a statue.

The narrative invites viewers to unravel the tragic legacy that may be catching up with Vivi's descendants. Aimed at children ages 6 to 13, according to Écran Total, the animated series promises a blend of adventure and heartfelt storytelling that honors the spirit of the original Final Fantasy IX game.

With Eurovisual now at the helm, fans can look forward to a fresh, high-quality interpretation of the acclaimed franchise. Stay tuned for further updates on the broadcast schedule and additional details as 'Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy' continues its journey toward release.
